In the Department of Biedma, the landscapes of the Península Valdés and wildlife watching at various coastal locations shape the travel experience. When planning, it is worth considering two questions: What kind of surroundings would you like to experience, and when are the sightings you are especially interested in possible? Puerto Pirámides offers a specific location to focus on: it is the only urban center within the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés and serves as a starting point for excursions to attractions on the peninsula.

Steppe, wetlands, and marine mammals

The Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés covers 887,775 hectares of Patagonian steppe, as well as plains and plateau landscapes. Its Ramsar wetlands include the Golfo San José and the Golfo Nuevo. Both serve as feeding and resting grounds for resident and migratory birds. Expansive landscapes and wetlands are thus complemented by opportunities for wildlife watching along the coast.

The protected areas are also connected: the Península Valdés Biosphere Reserve includes the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés, the Área Natural Protegida Punta Loma, and the Área Natural Protegida Punta León. UNESCO describes the Península Valdés as an area of global importance for the protection of marine mammals. It is home to breeding populations of endangered Southern right whales, as well as significant breeding populations of southern elephant seals and South American sea lions.

At Punta Loma, an elevated viewpoint overlooks the Golfo Nuevo and a permanent colony of South American sea lions. You can also see a colony of Magellanic penguins at Caleta Valdés, where they breed from late September to mid-April. At the southern tip of the Caleta lies the Punta Cantor reserve, home to a colony of southern elephant seals.

Wildlife watching at different times of year

Seasonal wildlife watching is spread across different locations and months. Orcas can be seen at Punta Norte especially in March and April. When hunting young sea lions, they deliberately strand themselves on the beach. Orcas can also be seen at Caleta Valdés in October and November, when southern elephant seal pups are present there.

El Doradillo offers another perspective: in the nature reserve there, whales can be watched from the shore from June to October. In Puerto Pirámides, whale watching by boat—particularly to see Southern right whales—is the main visitor activity. Check the time windows and availability before your trip. This will help you weigh the different options according to your travel dates and preferred way of watching wildlife, without treating them as interchangeable experiences.

Puerto Pirámides and activities on the water

In addition to whale watching, snorkeling trips with sea lions are offered in Puerto Pirámides. Diving experiences are available year-round; snorkeling and diving with sea lions are also among the activities on offer. Coastal walks provide another way to spend your time. Check the availability and conditions of activities with the providers in advance.

Local cuisine is also part of the town’s character: Puerto Pirámides offers seafood dishes, including gratinéed scallops, local shellfish, and grilled trout. The selection at individual establishments may change, so it is best to check the specific menu in person. When choosing a base in Biedma, Puerto Pirámides’ role as the only urban center within the protected area and as a starting point for excursions can be helpful if you want to include attractions on the Península Valdés in your plans.

Visitor centers and getting there

The interpretation centers focus on different themes. The Punta Norte center features orca models, information panels, reinforced walkways, and visitor rest areas. The Istmo Carlos Ameghino center has themed rooms on geology and geography, the steppe, marine mammals, Southern right whales, and history; it also has a renewed interpretive trail within the protected area. The Isla de los Pájaros center offers 3D depictions of birds, an environmental library, and renovated outdoor walkways.

The Caleta Valdés visitor center has paths accessible to people with reduced mobility, as well as accessible restrooms. Check the condition of these facilities again before your visit. Puerto Pirámides can be reached via Provincial Route No. 2, which leads into the Península Valdés from National Route No. 3. Provincial Route No. 42 is the main access route to El Doradillo; as road regulations may change, check current conditions before setting out.
