Dos Pozos – Penguins, Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Dos Pozos
Dos Pozos combines nature watching with a distinctive history along Provincial Route 1. Punta Tombo is geographically located in the Paraje Dos Pozos, in the Florentino Ameghino Department of Chubut Province. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on different things: visiting the protected area, the historic post office or the guided activities offered by La Antonieta.
Punta Tombo: Penguins and Walking Trail
The Punta Tombo protected area is open to visitors. Check the latest visitor conditions before setting out. It protects the largest continental colony of Magellanic penguins, with almost half a million animals. The 3-kilometer Sendero de la Pingüinera loop trail passes several viewpoints. From there, you can observe and photograph penguins, their nests and their behavior during the breeding season.
The Centro de Interpretación complements wildlife watching in the field with a themed walk. It introduces local wildlife, from the seabed to the surface, and explores how people coexist with local fauna. The visit therefore focuses on both the animals and their nesting sites, as well as their surroundings.
Historic Post Office on Provincial Route 1
The historic Estafeta de Correos y Telégrafos de Dos Pozos is located at kilometer 234 of Provincial Route 1, at the entrance to the protected area and about 25 kilometers before its entrance. The former Estafeta de Correo of Paraje Dos Pozos dates back to 1900. In 2025, Chubut Province declared the Antigua Estafeta de Correos y Telégrafo de Dos Pozos, together with its associated plot of land, tangible cultural heritage.
Accommodation and Activities at La Antonieta
La Antonieta offers rural accommodation at the entrance to the protected area in Dos Pozos. Restrooms are available at the main house; meals are served at its country inn, which also welcomes visitors who access the protected area through La Antonieta. As accommodation availability can change, check before you travel.
La Antonieta offers overnight guests only a complimentary evening walk along Provincial Route 1 after dinner. On this road, free of traffic, light and noise pollution, you can admire the Patagonian sky and the Milky Way. If you would like to plan this walk, confirm its current availability in advance.
Guided Wildlife Watching and Tours
La Antonieta organizes guided visits to a colony of Southern elephant seals. The haul-out site is reached via a 10-kilometer route; visits take place in small groups at set times to avoid disturbing the animals’ coastal habitat. Breeding groups can be observed during the peak season from September to November. More than 200 Southern elephant seals were counted in Reserva Natural Dos Pozos in summer; population numbers can vary. The September-to-November period refers to the peak viewing season, while the figure of more than 200 refers to a summer count.
La Antonieta organizes guided horseback rides to viewpoints in the Bajo de Dos Pozos. Advance reservations by email are required, and the rides are accompanied by a local guide. Another option is a moderate trek by off-road vehicle to Cañadón del Paisano, three kilometers from the main house. The tour goes through the canyon and ends at Tehuelche and Euro-Creole ruins, leading to sites with evidence of ancient human life. The activities therefore differ considerably in focus, ranging from guided wildlife watching to horseback rides and a trek with a historical connection.
