Trevelín between nature and culture
Trevelín is the gateway to Parque Nacional Los Alerces, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For planning your trip, the town brings together nature and regional culture: Trevelín is home to a lavender plantation and the Museo Histórico Regional, while tulip fields, waterfalls, and the Comunidad Ancestral Sierra Colorada are nearby. When looking for a hotel, it helps to organize these destinations according to your interests.
Lavender and tulips throughout the year
Tierra de Brotes is a new ecological lavender plantation in Patagonia’s natural setting. You can walk through the fields on guided tours. Lunch and picadas are offered outdoors; groups must reserve in advance. Opening hours are seasonal and may change, so check visiting hours before making your plans.
Nearby, on Ruta Nacional 259 and 13 kilometers from the center of Trevelín, lies Campo de Tulipanes. Developed and maintained by the Ledesma family, the site sees more than a million tulips bloom at the same time every October. If you want to see them in bloom, October is the relevant travel period. Annual dates and visitor arrangements may change; check the specific visiting arrangements in advance.
A glimpse into Trevelín’s history
The more than century-old building of Molino Harinero Andes houses the Museo Histórico Regional. The first exhibition room focuses on the encounter between Indigenous peoples and Welsh immigrants, as well as the figures who shaped the beginnings of present-day Trevelín. The museum visit thus offers a different focus from the nature destinations: its emphasis is on the people and history of the region.
Waterfalls and trails in the surrounding area
Arroyo Nant y Fall forms seven waterfalls. Three of them—Cascadas Larga, Mellizas, and La Petiza—can be visited in the protected area. The walk at Cascadas Nant y Fall takes about 45 minutes. In the Comunidad Ancestral Sierra Colorada, 17 kilometers from Trevelín, outdoor activities can be combined with Mapuche culture.
The Sendero de Micoturismo in Sierra Colorada is 1.7 kilometers long and has an elevation difference of 29 meters. The trail is considered easy to moderate, is suitable for all age groups, and takes approximately two hours. Access depends on the weather and guided arrangements. For planning your time, you can therefore compare the approximately 45-minute walk at Cascadas Nant y Fall with the roughly two-hour trail in Sierra Colorada; for the latter, access conditions are part of the planning.
More information about Departamento Futaleufú
Parque Nacional Los Alerces is also located in Departamento Futaleufú. The national park was established in 1937 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. From Esquel, it can be reached via Ruta Nacional 259 and Ruta Provincial 71 to Villa Futalaufquen. Another route leads to the southern area of the protected area from Esquel via Ruta Nacional 259 and Trevelín to the road to Complejo Hidroeléctrico Futaleufú; this road is 45 kilometers long.
Departamento Futaleufú is also home to the moderately difficult trail from Villa Futalaufquen to Puerto Limonao, which runs along the shore of Lago Futalaufquen. It is four kilometers each way. Together with the shorter walks and the trail in Sierra Colorada, this provides a concrete comparison of distances and time frames, without conflating destinations in the surrounding area with trails in the wider travel destination.
