Beruri on the Rio Purus

Beruri lies on the right bank of the Rio Purus, a major tributary of the Rio Solimões. The river is therefore a precise geographical reference point for the town. Beruri also has a river port. Both features situate the town by the water: one through its location on the Purus, the other through the port as a feature of the town. The Purus’s connection to the Rio Solimões also places Beruri within a broader river system.

The municipal level is important for understanding the wider geographical context: the Município de Beruri is part of the RDS Piagaçu-Purus, a sustainable development reserve. The riverside location refers to the town, while inclusion in the reserve applies to the Município. This makes it possible to distinguish the specific location from the broader regional context without treating the two levels as equivalent.

Festivals and cultural connections

The Festa de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré is the patron saint festival of the town of Beruri. Traditional town festivals are culturally significant overall; the patron saint festival gives this occasion its religious connection. It is therefore a distinct point of reference within the town’s festival tradition.

The Festa da Castanha is one of the traditional festivals that are important to Beruri. Under Law No. 6.894 of May 16, 2024, it was declared intangible cultural heritage of the state of Amazonas. This recognition connects the Município’s festival tradition with an honor bestowed at the state level. The Festival da Castanha also has regional appeal: it brings friends together and attracts numerous visitors and tourists from across the Amazonas region. Its importance to visitors thus extends beyond the town; the festival is associated with the Município de Beruri.

Festival FolclĂłrico de Beruri

The Festival Folclórico de Beruri is another cultural event. Its first edition took place in 2025 at Praça de São Francisco. Traditional carimbó and Portuguese dance were performed at the 2025 edition. The 2026 edition was expected to attract residents and visitors from different regions of the state of Amazonas. The years offer different points of reference: for 2025, the location of the first edition and the dances performed are specified; for 2026, the expected appeal to visitors from several regions is noted.

Crafts and river navigation tradition

The crafts of the Município also contribute to Beruri’s regional character. Wood carvings and miniature boats and rabetas are made there. These works represent the regional river navigation tradition. While the river port makes the town’s connection to the water tangible, the miniatures refer to navigation as a tradition represented through craftwork. In this way, the works complement the cultural festivals with another specific connection to the region.

When choosing Beruri as a travel destination, you can therefore explore different aspects of the place: its location on the Rio Purus, the Município’s inclusion in the RDS Piagaçu-Purus, and its religious, cultural, and craft traditions. The festivals mentioned differ in their occasion and historical context; the river port and the works featuring boats and rabetas each add another dimension to this picture.
