Arraial Do Cabo: Beaches, Diving and Culture
Accommodation in Arraial Do Cabo
Arraial Do Cabo can be explored through different interests in the sea and culture, including quiet coves, clear water, dune and restinga landscapes, dive sites and cultural attractions. When planning your hotel stay, it helps to distinguish between the various beaches and activities based on their landscape, access and conditions. This lets you decide which themes you want to focus on during your trip.
Beaches and Waters
Prainha is a cove with calm seas. Praia dos Anjos lies in the heart of the city of Arraial Do Cabo and is a prominent landmark for the urban part of your stay. At Praia Grande, 40 km of fine white sand, dunes and restinga landscapes define the scenery; the water is cold and clear. Praia do Farol is known for its clear water and rich marine biodiversity. Prainhas do Pontal do Atalaia also have calm, clear water that is suitable for swimming. Each place has its own distinctive features: alongside the landscape and water color, calm conditions and suitability for swimming are also important at Prainhas.
Access and Activities
Access varies considerably from one beach to another. Praia do Forno can be reached via a hiking trail or by boat. From Prainha, a short hiking trail leads to Praia da Graçainha. Its calm conditions make it well suited to snorkeling; sea conditions can vary, which you should take into account when planning this activity. Praia Brava can be reached via a hiking trail and a staircase. Because of its rough seas and strong waves, it is considered suitable for experienced surfers. So while calm conditions for snorkeling are the main draw at Graçainha, waves and its suitability for experienced surfers are key at Praia Brava.
Boat trips are among the activities available in Arraial Do Cabo. For diving enthusiasts, there are around 30 dive sites; popular ones include Ilha dos Porcos, Ilha do Farol and Cardeiro. The approximate number gives an overview of the diving opportunities, while the three names listed provide specific reference points to help you choose.
Culture and Maritime History
The cultural attractions also have different focuses. Igreja Nossa Senhora dos Remédios was the first church in Brazil where Mass was celebrated indoors. Museu Oceanográfico da Marinha is located at Praia dos Anjos. It preserves, researches, interprets and displays an oceanographic collection, as well as historical and cultural materials relating to the marine environment of Arraial Do Cabo. Alongside coastal scenery and activities on the water, the marine world and its cultural history are also central themes.
For contemporary art, Casa De Vidro José De Dome is an art center with a modern exhibition space and a regular exhibition calendar; each exhibition lasts one month. Casa da Poesia Victorino Carriço is a public venue for poetry readings, choro gatherings, readings of stories and poems, and literary workshops. Ponto de Cultura dos Artesãos de Arraial Do Cabo offers workshops in bobbin lace. The cultural scene thus spans visual art and literature, as well as music and crafts.
Reserva Extrativista Marinha do Arraial do Cabo was established in 1997 to protect the traditional culture of artisanal fishing in the municipality of Arraial do Cabo. This community-focused perspective complements the individual cultural attractions by protecting a local tradition. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on nature and water activities, cultural institutions or the historical connection to artisanal fishing.
