Cabo Frio combines long city beaches with a wide range of historical and cultural themes. At Praia do Forte, coastal scenery meets a structure dating back to the 17th century. Other highlights range from religious architecture to the history of surfing. This lets you tailor your stay to the themes that interest you most.

City beaches and varied stretches of coastline

Praia do Forte is a centrally located city beach. It stretches for 7.5 kilometers and is known for its fine white sand and clear water. It is also part of the restinga ecosystem of the state of Rio de Janeiro. This beach brings together an urban coastal setting and a distinctive natural landscape.

Praia do Peró is 7 kilometers long, making Praia do Forte half a kilometer longer. In 2018, Praia do Peró received the international Blue Flag award for the quality of its beach and water, as well as for accessibility. These offer two different points of comparison when choosing between Cabo Frio’s beaches: Praia do Forte’s length and urban location, and the criteria for which Praia do Peró was recognized in 2018.

The waters at Praia das Conchas are calm and crystal clear, making them suitable for diving. You can reach the beach on foot either by walking along the sand of Praia do Peró or via an unpaved road. Praia Brava offers a different experience: it is accessible only by a trail and is suitable for surfing. These two beach options therefore differ both in their stated access routes and in the activities described.

History and architecture in Cabo Frio

The cultural landscape of Cabo Frio was designated a heritage site by IPHAN in 1967. Forte de São Matheus de Cabo Frio, built in the 17th century, is located at Praia do Forte. Capela Nossa Senhora da Guia adds to the city’s religious and protected architectural heritage. It was built in 1740.

Bairro da Passagem offers another perspective on architectural history: its historic buildings include structures from the 19th and 20th centuries. The neighborhood is also home to Igreja de São Benedito, built in the 18th century by enslaved people. The hills and elevations along the canal in the Praia do Forte area contain archaeological heritage in the form of sambaquis. The historical themes thus range from religious buildings to archaeological traces.

Religious art, surfing history, and views

Convento de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos houses the Museu de Arte Religiosa e Tradicional. Its collection includes terracotta and wooden figures, furniture, and other works of sacred art. Espaço Cultural do Surfe offers a very different cultural focus: it was the first place in Brazil dedicated to surfing and has a collection of more than 2,500 objects related to the history of surfing. Religious art and surfing history thus stand side by side as distinct themes of the city.

Morro da Guia is the highest point in Cabo Frio and offers 360-degree views of the city center and its surroundings. This panoramic view complements impressions of individual beaches and buildings with a perspective on the city center and its setting.

Dining in Bairro da Passagem

Bairro da Passagem has a dining district with various bars and restaurants, where food and music come together. Alongside its historic buildings, culinary and musical themes are also part of the neighborhood’s character. When choosing Cabo Frio for your stay, you can focus on a variety of experiences, including the coast, architecture, religious art, surfing history, and dining.
