Iguaba Grande: Lagoon, Coastal Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Iguaba Grande
Iguaba Grande brings together the shoreline of the Lagoa de Araruama, coastal trails, protected areas and a few cultural sites. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in the city, it can help to first decide what you want to focus on: Would you like to include calm waters and stand-up paddling, explore a trail along the shore, or combine your visit with nature and culture? Each place offers its own distinct highlights.
Water and Shoreline Trails
The water along the shore of the Lagoa de Araruama in Iguaba Grande is calm. According to the local tourism description, the shoreline is also suitable for stand-up paddling. This suitability may depend on the conditions at the time, so bear that in mind if you’re planning the activity.
In the Reserva da Ponta da Farinha protected area, the main trail runs along the shore of the Lagoa, passing Ponta do Bico Preto. The trail alternates between beach sections. Tides and trail conditions can change, so take them into account when planning.
The coastal trail in the APA das Andorinhas begins at Praia das Andorinhas, which is still within Iguaba Grande, and ends at the beach of Iguabinha in Araruama. It is mostly flat, but also includes rocky sections and stretches through ankle-deep water. Water levels and trail conditions may vary. The trails differ in the features described: the main trail is defined by its shoreline route and alternating beach sections, while the APA coastal trail also has a specified starting point and destination, as well as varied terrain.
Natural Areas and Views
The Parque Natural Municipal de Iguaba Grande is a protected area of about 186,000 m² with Atlantic Forest vegetation. This means that, alongside the immediate shoreline, the town also has a designated natural area. If you’d like to make protected landscapes a focus of your trip, you can include the park as a separate highlight.
At its inauguration in December 2024, the Mirante Municipal Dona Célia was described as having three panoramic platforms with views of the Laguna de Araruama and the Região Serrana. Facilities also reported at that time included a food area with a restaurant, accessible features, restrooms, a children’s playground and parking. Check that the facilities are currently available before your visit.
Culture and Events
The Oratório Santa Rita de Cássia, dating from 1917, is located on Ilha de Santa Rita. Its historical significance adds a cultural site with a specific date to the themes of water and nature.
The city of Iguaba Grande’s events calendar includes Carnival, Iguapira as a June festival, motorcycle gatherings, food events and craft fairs. The program ranges from festivals to gatherings and markets. If an event date will determine your trip, check the specific dates and whether individual events are held regularly.
One example with clearly specified dates is the second Iguaba Cake Show: it took place on August 2 and 3, 2025, at Mirante Dona Célia and featured an interactive program with workshops.
