Macuco: Folklore, Festivals and Rural Tourism
Accommodation in Macuco
Macuco appeals to travelers with different interests: folklore and the patron saint festival sit alongside rural agriculture, craft production, and individual event programs. For planning, it helps to distinguish between a specific festival date and a general interest in rural tourism. If you are planning your trip around an event, check the date of the edition you want to attend before booking your hotel.
Folklore, Festivals, and Local History
The Festival de Folias de Reis de Macuco is considered intangible cultural heritage of the municipality and an important folkloric tradition in the region. The Festa de São João Batista is Macuco’s traditional patron saint festival and attracts residents and tourists. Folklore takes center stage at the Folias de Reis festival, while the Festa de São João Batista has a special connection to the town’s patron saint. Both traditions offer different ways to enjoy a culturally focused trip.
At the 2026 Festa de São João Batista, the Encantos de Macuco exhibition opened at the bandstand in Praça Professor João Brasil. It featured collections and images about the municipality’s history for residents and tourists. The exhibition therefore offers a historically situated glimpse into Macuco’s local history; its presentation at that time does not indicate that it is currently available.
Rural Routes and Regional Products
The Turismo Rural project, presented in 2019, included a historical tour of centuries-old farms as well as agricultural and craft production. Fazenda Val de Palmas was also part of the rural tourism route. The project also planned for families to host tourists. This hosting role was a project proposal, not a guarantee of an offer that can be booked today.
A Roteiro de Visitação described in 2023 included visits to workshops producing sweets, cheese, and handcrafted cachaça. The tour also included lunch at Fazenda do Ribeirão Dourado. This program combines insights into the production of regional goods with a stop at a farm. If you want to include a stop like this in your plans, ask about the arrangements for visits in advance.
Turismo Rural also features hiking, horseback riding, and cycling tours between agricultural and nature-focused attractions. These different ways of getting around give the rural theme distinct nuances. Before taking a specific tour, ask about the route conditions and access arrangements.
Events on the Road and in the Festival Program
The Trilha de São João Batista is a traditional event in Macuco, attracting hundreds of motorcyclists from different parts of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Its route is about 50 kilometers long and starts and ends at Parque de Exposições Edgar Rodrigues Luterbach, the Macuco Rural Park. A 15th edition was documented in 2023; as this does not establish a current event date, check the dates if you want to plan your trip around the Trilha.
The Cavalgada de Macuco also connects different parts of the municipality: its 18th edition in 2023 passed through rural and urban areas and offered views of Macuco’s natural landscape. This makes it different from the Trilha, whose framework is its approximately 50-kilometer route and the motorcyclists taking part. Both events are tied to specific editions, so check the dates before planning your trip around them.
What Expo-Macuco Offered
The 2025 Expo-Macuco program included a craft and food fair. Visitors could browse local handicrafts and sample traditional dishes. The same edition also featured Fazendinha Kids, where children could learn about farm animals and spend time with them. There was also a Parque Infantil with free rides for children. These program items relate to the 2025 edition of Expo-Macuco; check the program for any later editions.
