Paraíba do Sul offers several distinct themes for your trip: springs in Parque Salutaris, local history at Jardim Velho, cultural venues and railway heritage. When choosing a hotel, it may help to first decide what to focus on: landscape, town history or the pilgrimage and cultural sites in the municipality.

Springs, Views and Waterways

Parque Salutaris is home to springs with alkaline, magnesium-rich and iron-rich water. These three descriptions reflect the character of the springs there. Together with the viewpoints and waterways in the surrounding area, the park is one of the distinct landscape themes you can consider when planning a trip to Paraíba do Sul.

Pedra da Tocaia is the highest point in the city and offers a view of Paraíba do Sul. Access is only via paths through densely forested sections; the attraction is recommended for experienced visitors. This information is more important for planning than simply looking at the view: the nature of the trail is as much a factor in the decision as the destination itself.

Cachoeira Agronômica is located on Ribeirão do Lucas, a right-bank tributary of the Rio Paraíba do Sul, about 1 km upstream from the city center. Its location can therefore be understood in terms of both the waterway and its approximate distance from the center.

Squares, Culture and Railway History

Jardim Velho, also known as São João Marcos, is a large square with numerous imperial palms. They have been arranged in the shape of a Maltese cross since 1868. The municipality’s first settlement developed at this square on the banks of the Rio Paraíba do Sul. This is where the town’s historical development meets the square’s distinctive design.

Teatro Mariano Aranha also brings together local culture and music history: Ari Barroso performed Aquarela do Brasil there publicly for the first time. Today, the theater houses the Fundação Cultural. The venue can therefore be associated both with a well-known song and with its current cultural use.

Paraíba do Sul railway station was inaugurated in 1867 in the presence of Emperor Pedro II. The former station now houses the Centro Cultural Maria de Lourdes Tavares. Visitors can discover the work of local artisans there, especially the embroidery of Paraíba do Sul.

Another testament to railway history is Ponte Leopoldo Teixeira Leite, known as Ponte Preta. Engineer Paulo de Frontin had it built for railway traffic in 1898; it connects the Ponte Preta and Jatobá neighborhoods. The former Estrada-Real railway line is currently out of service. The bridge’s construction date, former purpose and connection between the two neighborhoods give it a distinct place in local history.

Local character also comes through in the cuisine: visitors to Paraíba do Sul can sample handmade sweets. This adds a culinary element to the cultural and historical themes, without requiring a visit to any specific producer or venue.

Other Places in the Municipality

In the surrounding municipality, Santuário Jubilar Bom Jesus de Matosinhos welcomes pilgrims. Pilgrimages must be arranged in advance, particularly with regard to service times and other pastoral activities. If you plan a visit, be sure to make arrangements beforehand.

Museu Histórico de Tiradentes is also located in the surrounding municipality, in the district of Inconfidência, also known as Sebollas. The museum received some of Tiradentes’ mortal remains, as well as personal belongings of the martyr of the Inconfidência. This association makes the museum a distinct historical destination within the municipality, separate from the central squares and cultural venues of Paraíba do Sul.

These sites offer different options for planning your trip: the springs and Pedra da Tocaia represent the landscape, Jardim Velho and the railway heritage tell the town’s history, while the theater and cultural center offer cultural connections. If pilgrimage sites are part of your trip, remember that pilgrimages must be arranged in advance.
