Rio Claro combines archaeological history with hiking trails and nature experiences. At the Parque Arqueológico e Ambiental de São João Marcos, visitors encounter the history of the area; the Volta das Águas passes through ecological, cultural and historical areas of the municipality. A striking rock formation, birdwatching and activities on the water are also among the destination’s many attractions.

Archaeology, Churches and Culture

The Parque Arqueológico e Ambiental de São João Marcos is considered Brazil’s first urban archaeological site. It maintains a permanent Centro de Memória with models, banners, objects and digital totems, as well as a video about the history of São João Marcos. Visitors can also walk the entire Caminho Imperial. The park thus combines exploring the area’s history with a route you can discover on foot.

Churches and collections also tell the story of Rio Claro’s past. The Igreja Nossa Senhora da Piedade was built by enslaved people in the late 18th or early 19th century. It houses the image of the patron saint of the municipality of Rio Claro. The Capela de São Joaquim da Grama was declared state heritage by the Instituto Natural do Patrimônio Cultural (Inepac). The Casa da Cultura Manoel Gonçalves de Souza Portugal preserves, among other things, a classical clock from the former town of São João Marcos.

In Lídice, the Festa da Paz is considered one of Rio Claro’s most traditional celebrations and is connected with the area’s history. The annual program changes, so check current event dates before traveling. Lídice is also the setting for “Vem Passarinhar”: the event combines birdwatching with hikes in the highlands, including along historic sections of the former railway line. Dates and routes vary, so checking the event calendar can be helpful when planning.

The Volta das Águas: different ways to experience the route

The long-distance route “Volta das Águas de Rio Claro” was officially established as a strategic public facility for sustainable development by Municipal Law No. 1.402/2025. The multimodal route is 310.77 kilometers long in total and includes sections for horseback riding, hiking, canoeing and cycling. The route covers 174 kilometers for horseback riding, 183 kilometers for hiking, 20 kilometers for canoeing and 171 kilometers for cycling. The different distance figures help distinguish the planned options by mode of travel.

The Trilha Volta das Águas passes through ecological, cultural and historical areas of Rio Claro. These include the Parque Arqueológico de São João Marcos, the Caminho do Ouro and places connected with the coffee cycle. The route brings together several aspects of the municipality, although not every section has the same character. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you are more interested in history, scenery or the different activities along the route.

Rock Formations, Birds and Experiences on the Water

Pedra do Bispo is a 1,650-meter-high rock formation in the Serra da Carioca. From the summit, the view extends as far as the city of Angra dos Reis, among other places. The Serra dos Coelhos road leading to Pedra do Bispo underwent drainage and paving work along a section of about 2.5 kilometers. Check local conditions before driving.

As of April 2026, 371 bird species had been recorded in Rio Claro, and the municipality ranked 17th in the state ranking at that time. Further observations may increase the number of recorded bird species. For anglers, the Represa de Ribeirão das Lajes is described as a fishing spot for tucunaré, particularly between March and September. Check seasonal conditions and access locally. Rafting on the Rio Piraí is listed in Rio Claro as an ecotourism and extreme sports activity. Provider availability and river conditions may change, so check before making specific plans.

The different highlights offer a range of ways to shape a stay: you can focus on historic places and collections, explore hiking and cycling routes, or plan nature-watching and activities on the water. This lets you discover Rio Claro through the themes that interest you most.
