In Agres, cultural history meets nature and water. The Cava Gran d’Agres tells the story of snow cellar construction and commercial use; churches, a sanctuary and religious ceramics add to the cultural heritage. Two routes offer distinct experiences, alongside water sites and traditional dishes. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you’re most interested in historic buildings, a route or local cuisine.

Cava Gran and the history of snow

The Cava Gran d’Agres is located in Agres, in the Serra de Mariola in the Comtat, at an altitude of 1,220 metres. It was built in the 17th century and remained in full commercial use until 1906. An emblematic example of this type of snow cellar, it is also a landmark of the Serra de Mariola Natural Park. Its construction date, former use and elevation give this site a distinctive place among Agres’s cultural and landscape attractions.

The Cava del tejo is also part of the history of these structures: it dates from the 18th century. You’ll encounter the two names in different ways as you explore the routes around Agres. If you’re interested in the historic trade and its buildings, they offer a specific focus for learning about the town’s past.

The sanctuary, church and other aspects of cultural history

The Santuario de la Virgen del Castillo lies within the Sierra Mariola and its natural park. The A la sombra de las cavas route reaches the foot of the sanctuary after a short climb from the Convento de Agres recreational area. Its description thus links a starting point with a religious building in the landscape, without requiring a longer route.

The origins of the Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel in Agres date back almost to the time of the Christian conquest. By the first half of the 14th century, the parish priest of Agres was already taking part in diocesan synods in Valencia. Religious ceramic altarpieces, known as Els Taulellets and dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, have also been preserved in the streets and at the Santuario. Another part of the cultural heritage is the Torre Atalaya, which is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) under the Second Additional Provision of Law 16/1985. The Cueva Beneito adds archaeological traces of human presence, spanning the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic, to these historic sites.

Routes and water sites in Agres

The A la sombra de las cavas route passes close to the Cava del tejo. The Fonts d’Agres micro-route, by contrast, focuses on water heritage: it is just over 1.5 kilometres long, runs through Agres and includes the Font de l’Assut and a washhouse. It starts at the Convent, also known as the Santuario de la Mare de Déu del Castell. The contrast is clear: one route passes near a historic snow cellar, while the other takes in a fountain and washhouse.

Agres has numerous water springs fed by sources in the Sierra Mariola Natural Park. At Les Jordanes and Molí Mató, visitors can see waterfalls after heavy rainfall. This distinction is useful when planning: the springs are part of the town’s described water landscape, while cascades at the two named locations depend specifically on heavy rain.

Local cuisine and an August event

Traditional dishes in Agres include Pericana, arroz caldoso, Gazpachos, Borreta and stuffed peppers. These dishes offer a distinct way to experience the town, complementing its buildings and routes. Since 2016, the Representació de l’Aparició de la Mare de Déu d’Agres has been held in Agres on the last Friday and Saturday of August. If this event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates for your chosen year. This lets you consider cultural history, a specific event date and local food as distinct aspects of your travel plans.
