When planning your stay in Benitachell, you can consider the coast, hiking routes and cultural heritage as distinct areas of interest. The coves, trails and cultural sites differ in their characteristics and access conditions. Taking these features into account in advance can help you plan your itinerary more effectively.

Coves and special access conditions

Vehicles are not allowed to drive to Cala del Moraig. The car park is above the descent, near the start of the road to the cove; from there, visitors continue on foot to the beach. As access rules may change seasonally, check the municipality’s information before setting out.

Next to Cala del Moraig is Cova dels Arcs, a sea cave with large natural arches. Over time, water has shaped these arches out of the rock. The cave can be reached from the beach, but visiting it can be dangerous under certain conditions. Therefore, check local notices before your visit. Its formation is said to have taken place over a period of 60,000 years.

Cala Llebeig offers a different kind of coastline: this small, secluded cove lies between El Poble Nou de Benitatxell and Teulada-Moraira and can only be reached on foot or by sea. Old fishermen’s huts and traces of former coastal surveillance contribute to the site’s traditional character. For planning purposes, access is a key difference from Cala del Moraig, where the car park is above the descent.

Routes combining views and geology

Ruta Falla del Moraig is a short, linear route of low difficulty, covering 275 metres. Around 30 minutes is given as a guide; trail conditions may vary. The route leads to a viewpoint overlooking all of Cala del Moraig to the north, with Cap de la Nau in the background. In its final section, it reaches an area of geological interest: features here include the Moraig Fault, the Vasenilla, and formations and drainage channels shaped by water and tectonic movements.

Ruta dels Penya-segats 1 also passes through a landscape with its own distinct character: it runs along the cliffs and offers Mediterranean vegetation as well as old caves used by fishermen. By contrast, Ruta Camí de la Serp – Puig de la Llorença – Cala Llebeig focuses on traces of earlier land use. Features of this route include old mule tracks, agricultural terraces with dry-stone walls, lime kilns and the remains of a medieval quarry.

When planning Ruta dels Testos, allow for another specific feature of the trail: ropes are used on the final three sections of the descent.

Cultural landscape and local history

Ruta Abiar-Calistros passes through terraced hills where Muscat grapes are the predominant crop. This gives it a different landscape focus from the coastal trails: here, the emphasis is on an agricultural setting. Muscat also plays a role in local food and drink culture.

The self-guided routes of Museu al Vent offer a distinctive cultural perspective on Benitachell’s heritage. The stops take you through the town centre, the rural landscape and the coastal area. Those interested in the history of a place can explore different themes this way, rather than focusing on just one type of landscape.

Pous de l'Abiar has a recreational area and a system of natural wells. The wells supplied the population with water until the 1970s. The site thus combines a place to relax with a tangible part of the local history of water supply.

Gastronomy and the Mitjafava Fest

Benitachell’s traditional cuisine is shaped by fishing and agriculture. It includes salted dishes, sweets with Arab influences, artisanally produced wine and Vino Moraig. The season also matters: broad beans are among the local foods mentioned in spring, and Muscat grapes in summer. Together with the terraced hills of Ruta Abiar-Calistros, these traditions offer insight into the agricultural side of the area.

The Mitjafava Fest takes place in April, during the broad bean harvest. The specific programme dates may vary; check them before your trip if you are planning to attend the festival.
