Eslida lies in the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Espadán and is surrounded by mountains. The municipality encompasses rugged mountains and ravines, pine and cork oak forests, and mineral springs. If you are planning a stay here, you can choose between focusing on hiking trails and exploring the town’s varied history. The landscape and historic townscape offer two different ways to experience the area: spending time outdoors or exploring its buildings and their history.

Hiking Trails Around Eslida

There are several specific starting points for hikes. The PR-CV-352 begins at Plaza del MolĂ in Eslida. The G-36 connects Eslida with Alcudia de Veo along a 13.4-kilometre walking route. The PR-CV-138 passes through the municipalities of Eslida and ChĂłvar; its nearly 10 kilometres can be covered in a day. The routes described therefore differ both in their destinations and in the time required: the G-36 is listed as 13.4 kilometres, while the PR-CV-138 is described as a day hike.

The Ruta de les Fonts begins at the visitor centre of the Parque Sierra de Espadán at Avenida Francisco Mondragón 2. Since information about the visitor centre may change, check the starting point before your visit. Font de Matilde has a recreation area; check in advance whether the facilities will be available during your visit. A local, signposted and restored hiking trail also leads to Font dels Llops and Coll Roig. Check the trail signs and the trail’s condition before setting out.

Architectural History and Townscape

The old town is characterised by narrow, winding and very steep lanes reminiscent of the style of an Arab medina. The surviving sections of the historic city wall are also part of the townscape: four entrance gates are named—the Portal Viejo, the Portal Nuevo, Teixidors and Virgen de los Dolores. Els Corrals is a group of former alquerías on the opposite side of the river from Eslida.

At Eslida Castle, you can see the unusual shape of its main tower: the Torre del Homenaje has a triangular ground plan, and two angled twin towers are described as defensive structures. Iglesia El Salvador was built over an Arab mosque. Its architectural design is Baroque, while its decoration is Rococo in style. These details tell the story of different layers of the town’s history without reducing them to a single era.

Construction of Ermita del Calvario began on 24 February 1704. The chapel is attached to a cistern, which contains a ceramic altarpiece of the Virgen de la Cueva Santa. Another historic structure is L'Arc de la Rambla, a Roman aqueduct over the River Anna. El Molí de l'Aire preserves the remains of an old grain mill. Together with the gates, lanes and buildings, these places offer various ways to explore Eslida’s architectural heritage.

Nature, Cycling and Local Honey

Parque Natural de la Sierra de Espadán has hiking trails and opportunities for cycling among springs, ravines and dense cork oak forests. For a specific cycling trip, the nearly 74-kilometre R19 cycling route is another option: it starts in the centre of Eslida and heads towards Artana on the CV-223. Road conditions and route status can change; check the information before setting out. The route covers a different distance from the hiking trails described, so factor its length and current conditions into your plans.

Beekeeping is also part of the area’s more recent history. In 2013, Eslida was considered a centre of reference for beekeeping and the production and manufacture of artisanal honey. At the time, eight beekeepers were registered for tax purposes; three of them had sales and marketing businesses in the municipality. The time frame is important: these figures describe the situation in 2013 and do not automatically reflect the current number of businesses.
