Alberic brings together historic buildings, outdoor art, open-air routes and a local sweet pastry tradition. If you are looking for a hotel in Alberic, these themes can help structure your stay: culture, activity and food culture can each be a focus in their own right. The area’s attractions include churches, a former convent and a medieval cistern, as well as activities among the orange groves and along the Río Júcar. Local traditions also give your stay a tangible connection to Alberic.

Cultural History and Townscape

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Lorenzo Mártir was built between the 17th and 18th centuries. The Antiguo Convento de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles dates from the 18th century. The antigua casa consistorial, the former town hall, also dates from the 18th century. This places two 18th-century buildings alongside the parish church, which was built over the course of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Alberic’s older history includes the cistern of the former lord’s palace, built in the 13th century. The palace was demolished in the 19th century; the cistern is its only surviving element. It thus offers a medieval counterpart to the later-dated church and town hall buildings.

A walk through Alberic reveals a range of traditional and stately homes. The streets also form an open-air museum of urban art, with works that may change over time. The Ermita de la Virgen de Cullera is in the La Troneta neighbourhood.

Domingo de Ramos is a day of many traditions in Alberic; the specific programme may vary from year to year. If you are planning a visit for this occasion, check that year’s programme.

Getting Around Alberic

The orange grove landscapes are ideal for cycling. Along the Río Júcar, you can go for a walk by following its course. This gives you two different activities to choose from: cycling through a landscape shaped by orange groves and walking along the river.

Just outside Alberic, the Ermita de Santa Bárbara stands on the “Muntanyeta” and can be reached on foot. As trail conditions can change, it is worth checking for current information before your visit. There are also routes to destinations such as the Cova de la Terreta. Check the trail markers on site if you would like to include a specific route in your plans.

Pastries and Traditions

Panquemaos, or Monas, are a sweet pastry speciality in Alberic, originating from Arab cuisine. The tradition has its own festival in October.

On 8 October, members of the Gremio de Horneros treat residents to a Panquemao tasting and a cup of hot chocolate. If you are planning your trip around this date, check the arrangements for that year. The religious traditions of Domingo de Ramos and the Panquemaos festival in October are different occasions that represent local culture.
