Teufenthal: Hiking and Cultural History in the Wynental
Accommodation in Teufenthal
Teufenthal lies in the central Wynental in the canton of Aargau. The adventure trail, sections of the aargauSüd high-level trail and local architectural history give the village a range of themes to explore during a stay. When choosing a hike, you can compare destinations and distances; the mill and Trostburg Castle add cultural and historical interest.
A hiking landscape in the central Wynental
The municipality extends from 438 metres at the Wyna to 630 metres on the Bampf, a spur of the Surberg. The Teufenthal adventure trail runs from 450 metres above sea level via Hochrüti, Dreiangel and Cholholz to Breiti at 564 metres above sea level. These two elevation ranges describe different things: the first refers to the entire municipal area, while the second describes the route of the adventure trail.
Hikes of varying distances
The aargauSüd high-level trail links two sections via Teufenthal railway station. Section 02 runs from Dürrenäsch via Liebegg Castle to the station and is 6.8 kilometres long. Section 03 starts there and runs via Wannenhof to Hochwacht on the Böhler, covering 6.3 kilometres. The estimated duration for this section is one hour and 50 minutes. According to the distance figures, Section 03 is slightly shorter than Section 02. Check current trail conditions before setting out; stage details may change if the route is revised.
In general, signal points on mountain peaks and prominent locations were part of the Swiss Hochwacht tradition. Since the mid-15th century, they had been used in Switzerland to pass on messages or raise an alarm. Another hike runs from Reinach via Homberg to Teufenthal. It is 17.8 kilometres long and includes 421 metres of ascent. This makes for a much longer route, with different destinations, compared with the two shorter sections of the high-level trail.
An adventure trail with marble runs and a legend
The Teufenthal adventure trail has seven marble runs built by Teufenthal businesses. Seven information panels beside the benches tell the legend of Liebegg Castle and Trostburg Castle. Along the trail, you will encounter both the marble runs and a story featuring these two named castles.
Architectural and cultural history
Trostburg Castle is privately owned and is not open to visitors; check its visitor status again before travelling. Its interior features elements from the Late Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo periods (Louis XV style). The Aargau Castle and Cultural Trail follows traces of industrial history, adding another historical dimension.
The mill is also significant in terms of cultural history: farmers from the surrounding area brought their grain there to be milled. The existing building is believed to have been constructed around the middle of the 18th century. An inscription on the yoke column in the mill cellar gives the year 1751 and the initials «HRWM». The year is part of the inscription; the building's date remains an approximate estimate.
