Unterkulm lies in the middle Wynental valley, between wooded hills. Nature watching, local history and market days reveal different sides of the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel in Unterkulm, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: Would you like to explore a circular trail and its plants, discover traces of the past or plan around a market date? The Mittleres Wynental swimming pool is another local attraction to consider when planning your visit.

Landscape and forest nature trail

Of the municipality’s 888 hectares, 309 hectares are forested. The forest is therefore an important part of the landscape, which is shaped by the hills of the middle Wynental valley. The Unterkulm forest nature trail in Ischlag Forest offers a hands-on way to experience nature. The circular trail is about 2.5 kilometres long; along the way, you can observe around 80 different trees and shrubs as they grow.

The information board above the Mittleres Wynental swimming pool is a recommended starting point. Benches offer places to rest, and the trail provides lovely views of Unterkulm. The nature trail thus combines botanical observation with places to take a break and views of the village. Those interested in the landscape can discover another side of Unterkulm here, beyond its architecture and market history.

Church and industrial history

Several historical layers have been preserved in the Reformed Church of Unterkulm. The masonry walls of the earliest known place of worship date back to the 12th century and remain in the present-day nave. The chancel paintings date to the early 14th century; they were rediscovered during the extensive restoration of 1967/68. These two dates place the structural remains and the paintings in different periods of history.

The KWC site offers another glimpse into the past. The foundry building, with its mechanical workshops, was built in 1896 and is one of the oldest parts of the KWC fittings factory complex. The KWC Museum is also housed in the foundry building. Unterkulm’s ecclesiastical architecture and art history thus sit alongside the history of an industrial complex as distinct themes.

Markets and local products

Around 50 to 60 market traders take part in Unterkulm’s market days, offering a varied selection of goods. This is an approximate figure; the number of participants may change. The May market also features a funfair for younger visitors. As the annual programme may change, check the latest market dates before visiting.

The Chomer-Samschtig-Märt is a market with its own tradition and has been held since 2012. Mainly regional vendors and local associations offer their products there on Zentrumsplatz. This gives the market a distinctly local character: the focus is on products from regional vendors and associations, alongside the market traders’ offerings. If a market is an important part of your travel plans, check the relevant date and current programme.

Swimming pool and directions

The Mittleres Wynental swimming pool is in Unterkulm, on the eastern side of the valley at the edge of the forest, near the municipal boundary with Teufenthal. It is run by the municipalities of Unterkulm, Oberkulm and Teufenthal. The swimming pool is about a ten-minute walk from the Unterkulm Nord WSB stop. This walking time is an approximate guide; the route and actual walking time may vary. If the information is important for your plans, check the route before your visit.

These themes are quite distinct: the forest nature trail focuses on botany, the church and KWC site represent different aspects of history, and the markets offer a glimpse of local products and vendors.
