Tegerfelden combines its wine-growing history with viewpoints, rest areas and traces of the past. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Tegerfelden, these themes can help you choose what to explore based on your interests: Would you like to learn more about winegrowing, take in the landscape and views, or discover the history of the castle? The following places and background information offer some specific starting points.

Winegrowing and the history of the vineyards

Tegerfelden is the second-largest wine-growing municipality in the canton of Aargau. Around 10% of Aargau’s diverse range of wines is produced here. The three vineyards are called Oberberg, Unterberg and Neuberg; Tegerfelden’s vineyards were first mentioned in the 13th century. The local history of winegrowing therefore goes back a long way, while the names of the vineyard areas continue to shape the landscape today.

Another turning point came in 1970: following land consolidation and the redistribution of vineyard plots, the three vineyards grew year by year to cover 38 hectares. This development provides a historical context for today’s wine-growing landscape, which you can explore from different perspectives at the museum and at wine events.

Winegrowing museum and tastings

The Aargau Cantonal Winegrowing Museum presents the diversity of Aargau wines across four floors designed around wine, with more than 1,000 exhibits. A guided tour lets you follow the wine’s journey step by step: from grafting vines and tending the vineyard to harvesting the grapes and processing them in the cellar, and finally bottling the wine. Reservations may be required for guided tours.

After a guided tour, visitors can taste wines from Aargau winemakers; whether this is possible depends on the arrangements made. Wine events and tastings also give interested visitors an opportunity to learn more about Tegerfelden’s long-standing wine culture. If an event is important to your travel dates, check the event schedule in advance.

Views and rest areas

The Raihalde viewpoint is located on the wine hiking trail. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Zurziberg, Ruckfeld and the Surb and Aare valleys, as well as toward the Black Forest. There is also a publicly accessible rest area with a fireplace at Raihalde. The viewpoint and rest area offer different kinds of experiences: you can focus on the views or plan to spend time at the rest area.

Another spot on the Zurzibiet wine hiking trail is the Schauberg Chälle site. The area includes woodland, a nutrient-poor meadow, a small stream and a rest area. If you are interested in different types of landscape, you can see how these elements exist side by side here. Chlopfspächt forest playground is considered the first forest playground of this size in the canton of Aargau.

Castle ruins and archaeological traces

Tegerfelden Castle was built toward the end of the 11th century on a rocky outcrop on Ruckfeld; some sections of the walls remain. The castle ruins were the seat of the Barons of Tegerfelden. The area also contains archaeological evidence of settlement during the Neolithic period, 3,500 to 5,000 years ago, as well as finds from Roman, Alemannic and Frankish times. The history associated with Tegerfelden therefore extends beyond its winegrowing past.

When visiting the castle ruins, take the directions into account: the route climbs uphill through the forest for about 600 metres, and there is no official footpath there. Check local information about access before your visit. This will help you plan your visit with the access conditions in mind, without assuming that the route is the same as other paths or offerings.

Practical information

Parking for the Aargau Cantonal Winegrowing Museum is available by the church; a bus stop is nearby. Check local travel information before your visit, as local regulations may change. When planning your trip, you can prioritize the museum, winegrowing history, viewpoints and historic sites according to your interests, without assuming they are all part of a single walking route.
