Ruschein lies north of Ilanz on a terrace; the area extends up to 1,900 m above sea level. The village has been documented since 765 and was a farming village for centuries, shaped by agriculture and the management of forests, meadows, pastures and alpine farmland. Churches and chapels, archaeological traces and paths into the mountain areas offer different ways to explore the region. When planning a hotel stay in Ruschein, consider whether you would mainly like to explore the village’s history or set aside time for hiking and mountain trails.

Church Hill, St. George’s Church and Chapels

The church dedicated to St. George stands on a church hill that served as a place of worship and sacrifice in pagan times. Excavations in 1965 uncovered the remains of the walls of an early church dating from the 7th century. The furnishings of St. George’s Church also reflect different periods: the wooden sculpture of St. George was created in the late 15th century, while the paintings in the choir’s star vault date from 1650. Here, archaeological traces and later religious art can be encountered in the same place.

The Chapel of St. Mary was consecrated with an altar on 19 August 1643. It faces north and consists of a vaulted nave and a narrower, vaulted choir with a polygonal end. The chapel is open daily and admission is free; check the visitor information before your visit, as access arrangements may change. The Chapel of St. Anthony has a different design: this hexagonal central-plan building was constructed around 1680 as a picturesque miniature. Its curved dome and lantern define the structure, while the altar dates back to 1635.

Frauenberg and its history

The ruins of Frauenberg Castle stand on a broad ridge southwest of St. George’s Church. Impressive sections of the surrounding wall remain; the ruins may date from between the 11th and 13th centuries. Public guided tours of Frauenberg are offered for groups of two or more. If you plan to join a tour, confirm the booking details before you travel. The ruins’ location and surviving wall offer a different way of exploring local history from the churches and archaeological finds on the church hill.

Hiking the Via Glion

The approximately 75-kilometre Via Glion passes through all 13 villages of the Ilanz/Glion municipality in seven varied stages, running right through the villages. The first stage leads uphill from Ilanz to Ruschein, continues along the old connecting road to Ladir, and then follows a forest path towards Siat. Along this stage, 13 information panels provide orientation and information, with audio and, in some cases, video content in German and Romansh. If Ruschein is part of your hiking plans, the route shows how the village fits into a longer trail through the municipality.

Other trails and seasonal activities

There are also specific options for other activities: varied single-track descents on a bike tour pass through Ruschein on the way down to Ilanz. In the area around Ladir, a marked snowshoe trail runs via Crusch and Cuolms da Ruschein to Alp Muota, then returns via Gandatscha and Darpiuns to the parish church of St. Zeno in Ladir. Snow and avalanche conditions vary by season; check conditions in advance. A steep path also leads from Alp da Ruschein over the Fuorcla da Sagognin into the Vorab alpine area.

Above Ruschein and Ladir, at 1,650 m above sea level, is the seasonal Tancadi Run Giosch self-service snack hut. It serves hot and cold drinks as well as light snacks. Check current opening times and access conditions before visiting. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between village history, longer hikes, bike descents and seasonal activities, without confusing these different options.
