Rothenburg combines a historic village centre with religious architectural and pilgrimage traditions, as well as options for active excursions. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth exploring the different sides of the town: the cobbled square in the village centre, the churches in Bertiswil, a hike into the Rotbach Gorge and leisure attractions such as Toni's Zoo each offer a different focus. When looking for a hotel in Rothenburg, it helps to first consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay.

The Village Centre and Its History

The village-centre area covers the inner part of the historic settlement. In the Middle Ages, the village held an important position as a central transit route along the north–south axis. This historical role gives the area a different perspective from the seasonal events held there today. Depending on the time of year, festivities and events take place in the cobbled square in the village centre, including Carnival celebrations and a Christmas market. If you are planning your trip around a particular event, check the relevant event dates in advance; dates may vary.

Churches and Religious Tradition

The history of architecture and faith also offers a distinct way to discover Rothenburg. Bertiswil Church was first mentioned in a document in 1173 and is one of the few pre-Baroque churches in the Canton of Lucerne. Bertiswil Church of St Mary is also associated with a religious tradition: a description from 2023 notes that believers venerate it as a Marian shrine and place of pilgrimage. Its architectural history and pilgrimage tradition are distinct aspects of Rothenburg’s cultural heritage.

Hiking and the Rotbach Gorge

Rothenburg offers opportunities for hiking and cycling, and there are several fire pits in the forests. One specifically described route is the “Dive into the Rotbach Gorge” hike: it starts and ends in the village centre, is 3.7 kilometres long and takes 55 minutes. The distance and stated duration can help you fit the hike into your day’s plans. You can do it independently, and it is suitable for families all year round.

The hike descends from the village centre into the Rotbach Gorge. The landscape changes dramatically there, and nature dominates along the Rotbach. At Riffigweiher, there is a barbecue spot and a playground along the route. This gives you both specific time and distance information and particular points of interest along the hike to help with your planning. The route is classified as suitable year-round, but local conditions can change; check them before setting off.

Leisure Attractions and Other Local Features

Toni's Zoo is a leisure attraction in Holzhüsern, Rothenburg. According to the operator’s description, it is home to more than 270 animals from 97 different species; these figures may change over time. Guided tours of the zoo offer a behind-the-scenes look. There is also a maze in Bürlimoos. The attractions offer different experiences: the zoo focuses on animals and guided tours, while the maze provides another leisure option in Rothenburg.

The Rotbach is also connected to another local feature: a wooden bridge between Rothenburg and Emmen crosses the stream. Together with the hike into the Rotbach Gorge, this is another specific structure associated with the Rotbach.
