Wilchingen is known as a winegrowing community in the Canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Its largely preserved village character, historic buildings and architecture offer insight into traditional Swiss life. Extensive vineyards lie in the surrounding area, which is considered scenically attractive. For planning your trip, this gives you three themes to explore: local history and church architecture, wine and landscape, and trails and nature watching.

Local History and Architecture

The Wilchingen Local History Museum displays objects related to the village’s history alongside a collection of paintings and three rooms dedicated to poets. This combination gives a visit to the museum an artistic and literary dimension in addition to its focus on local history.

St. Othmar’s Church is situated above the village of Wilchingen. It was built in 1676, incorporating an older tower from the 15th century. It is considered the first transverse church in the German-speaking part of Switzerland and served as a model for the Reformed parish church in Zurzach. The dates make the different construction phases concrete: the 1676 building incorporated a tower that was already older.

Experience Wine

The Rötiberg winery in Wilchingen offers wine tastings with information about wine styles, the variety of wine grapes, food and wine pairings, and stories from the winemaking trade.

Guided tours take visitors through production and storage areas, the historic vaulted cellar and the wine archive, with wine tastings during the tour. In a workshop, visitors create their own blend from different wines. The bottle is corked and labelled that same day and can be taken home. The difference lies in the focus: tastings introduce you to wine-related topics, tours combine a look at the facilities with a tasting, and the workshop lets you create your own blend.

Nature and Trails

At the “Wangental Natur Pur” biotope, a boardwalk and two observation huts provide a peaceful way to observe the diverse flora and fauna. The Wangental valley forms a transition between the Rhine and the Klettgau.

The hiking trail to Radegg Castle ruins starts at Wilchingen-Hallau railway station, passes through the outlying district of Unterneuhaus and reaches the ruins via the area around the mountain church, Stuel, Haartel and Rossberghof restaurant. The ruins are freely accessible, suitable for children and have a picnic area. If you plan to use the trail, check local trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.

There is a network of hiking and cycling trails in and around Wilchingen. The Klettgau Wine Route (SchweizMobil 751) runs through the vineyards around Wilchingen and is a specific cycling route within this network.

A carriage ride through the gently rolling hills and vineyards of the Schaffhausen Pinot Noir region offers a different perspective from the Klettgau Wine Route, which is a cycling route through the vineyards around Wilchingen.
