Kyburg-Buchegg combines Buchegg Castle with a local history museum, historic village scenes and hiking trails. This offers different ways to plan your visit: explore architectural and regional history around the castle tower, or enjoy a hike of several hours through the surrounding area. The landscape ranges from the broad plain of the Limpach Valley to the slope above Kyburg.

Buchegg Castle: Tower and Local History Museum

Buchegg Castle, a castle, stands in Kyburg-Buchegg. The medieval castle complex was burned down in 1383 by troops of the Counts of Neu-Kyburg during the Burgdorf War. Today, only a few sections of wall remain from the former complex. In 1546, the Buechischlössli was built on its grounds as a tower, which served as a prison until the 18th century.

The tower of Buchegg Castle has three storeys, is built from erratic boulders and tuff, and has a high hipped roof. It is open to visitors and now houses a local history museum. The museum hosts changing exhibitions on the cultural heritage of the Bucheggberg and on arts and crafts in the district. The Buchegg Castle ensemble is considered the most historically valuable ensemble in the village. It includes a restaurant, a playground and a car park; check current availability and parking arrangements before your visit.

Village setting and views

Kyburg is a hamlet-like settlement at the foot of a slope, with farmhouses from the 19th century arranged in a loose row. The broad plain of the Limpach Valley shapes the surrounding area; the undeveloped steep slope above Kyburg is essential to the silhouette of Buchegg Castle. From the viewpoint by the castle, you can see across the Limpach Valley and, in good weather, over the broad Swiss Plateau to the Alps.

Buchegg’s village setting also reflects the region’s rural architecture: short rows of multi-purpose farm buildings from the 19th century line both sides of the winding main road. Fenced kitchen and ornamental gardens, patches of meadow between the buildings, unpaved farmyards and distinctive trees are also characteristic features. The Bad Kyburg inn is a broad, two-storey building with a hipped roof, cross gable and Neoclassical features dating from the second half of the 19th century.

Hiking trails and practical planning

The Bucheggberg circular hiking trail starts and ends at the car park by Buchegg Castle in Kyburg-Buchegg. The Buchegg Castle Foundation maintains the trail; as a themed trail, it is part of the Solothurn Forest Walks. Allow 4 to 5 hours for the loop. Several connecting trails allow you to shorten the route.

At the start of the hike, the Mülitäli is home to one of the few nearly undeveloped streams on the Swiss Plateau. Maples, ash trees, alders, elms and willows grow there. The section along the Ramserenberg to Buchegg Kyburg has numerous benches and fire pits; if needed, check their current condition before your visit.

Another option is the Lohn–Mühledorf–Messen hike, which passes through Kyburg-Buchegg and takes approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes. The two durations are similar; the circular hike starts and ends at the castle, while the other route passes through Kyburg-Buchegg. For the hike to Buchegg Kyburg, a postal bus takes travellers from Bätterkinden to the Bad Kyburg inn. Alternatively, the section from Bätterkinden to the inn can be covered on foot in about half an hour. Another postal bus line runs directly to Buchegg. Check the timetable before travelling.

Regional produce and history

A small vineyard lies on the southern slope below Buchegg Castle. Buchegg is also home to the only cheese dairy in the Buechibärg that still makes cheese and produces several of its own varieties. A historical trace of regional production can be found in the sandstone cellars beneath Buchegg Castle: around the turn of the 20th century, Bayer Faist brewed the district’s popular “locally produced” beer there.
