Accommodation in Tägerwilen
As a travel destination, Tägerwilen offers a range of themes to consider when planning a hotel stay: history, technological and artistic landmarks, as well as trails and places by the water. Tägerwilen lies on the southern shore of Lake Constance, on Lake Untersee. The village was first mentioned in a document in 990 as Tegirwilare; its settlement history dates back to the Alemanni settling here in the 7th or 8th century. Tägerwilen’s history is closely connected with neighbouring Constance and includes the castle and the later-built Castell Palace beside it.
Castles and architectural history
The Castell Castle ruins are open to the public. As access arrangements may change, please check them before your visit. Guided tours of the ruins are available; check their availability in advance as well. The Chastel ruins cover an area of around 20 × 100 metres and are among the largest castle complexes in the canton of Thurgau. Castell Palace offers another facet of architectural history: the Moorish Hall was created in the newly built east tower between 1891 and 1894, commissioned by Adrian August Gonzalvo Maximilian von Scherer (1848–1901). It is one of the best-preserved neo-Moorish interiors of the late 19th century.
Technology and art in Tägerwilen
The Old Sawmill dates from the mid-19th century. By arrangement, visitors can see a water-powered single-blade saw in operation there. The Old Sawmill can be reached on the Thurbo S1 line via Tägerwilen Gottlieben station; check the timetable before travelling. The Ernst Kreidolf Room in the municipal building displays some of Ernst Kreidolf’s original works. Prior arrangements may be required to gain access.
The Tägerwilen Fairy-Tale Parade also draws on Ernst Kreidolf’s world of fairy tales: this local cultural event is a tribute to it. Check specific event dates before making plans.
Trails and activities
The Gripspfad (mental fitness trail) starts at the official castle-ruins car park, at the southernmost point of Grüntalstrasse. Its eleven different exercises are designed to stimulate and maintain mental fitness for young and old alike. Another activity focuses on regional winegrowing: the Vineyard Hiking Trail on Lake Untersee runs from Tägerwilen to Steckborn and shares information about the subject with day-trippers. Check the route details before setting out. Historically, land use in Tägerwilen included arable farming, livestock breeding, viticulture and fruit growing, as well as a large community-owned forest.
Since autumn 2024, signposted everyday cycling routes have been available in the northern and southern parts of the municipality, away from the main road. Among other things, they offer an alternative to the existing recreational cycle path in Tägermoos. The activities therefore have different focuses: mental exercises are at the heart of the Gripspfad, while the Vineyard Hiking Trail shares information about regional winegrowing. Tägermoos is included in the Federal Inventory of Fens of National Importance.
Places by the water and the regional setting
The Kuhhorn bathing area has a lawn for sunbathing with shade-providing trees and a gently sloping entry into the water, making it particularly suitable for families. Seerheinbad is a place for relaxation, socialising and sport, and is open to everyone. Check the current operating conditions before your visit.
The Kreuzlingen holiday region and the international Lake Constance landscape also help put the area in context. The Thurgau Tourism information centre in Kreuzlingen provides an overview of the region and helps with planning holidays and short breaks.
