Kamiah offers several ways to plan your trip: Riverfront Park on the Clearwater River, the history of the Nez Perce Nimiipuu, and seasonal cultural events. When looking for a hotel, you can coordinate your travel dates with museum hours or an event date.

Riverfront Park and Experiences on the Water

Riverfront Park is on the Clearwater Scenic Byway along Highway 12, right beside the Clearwater River. The park has a covered area, a pavilion that can be reserved, playground equipment, and two swings. From the park, you can take the Nature Trail upstream. Beside the bridge, an interpretive display tells the story of the Lewis and Clark Long Camp. This lets you combine a visit to the park, a walk upstream, and a glimpse into the area's history in a single visit.

Kamiah also offers opportunities for water activities, including river rafting trips and fishing. On the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway, Kamiah is one of the towns with a full range of services. If your drive follows this route, check the latest route information before you depart.

History of Kamiah

The Kamiah Historical Society and Museum preserves mammoth bones and artifacts of the Nez Perce Nimiipuu. From Memorial Day through September 30, the museum is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; visits are also available by appointment. Check the opening hours for your planned visit.

Kamiah was a winter home of the Nez Perce. It was also a place where the Nez Perce fished for steelhead and made “Kamia” ropes. In the spring of 1806, Lewis and Clark camped in the Kamiah Valley for several weeks while waiting for the snow to melt.

Art, Hands-On Projects, and Kamiah BBQ Days

Most of the public art is on Main Street and its side streets; more artworks can be found in River Front Park. River Arts Kamiah offers free classes and open, hands-on projects. Alongside viewing public art, visitors can take part in creative activities in town.

Kamiah BBQ Days is a Labor Day weekend tradition that has continued for more than 80 years. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.

Choose Travel Dates to Match Your Plans

There are two distinct considerations when choosing your dates: the museum has a seasonal opening period, with hours from Wednesday to Friday, while Kamiah BBQ Days takes place over Labor Day weekend. Before your trip, check the museum hours or the date of the upcoming event. This lets you plan your hotel search around the days that suit your planned visit, without conflating opening hours with festival dates.
