Lebanon offers travelers a range of themes to consider when planning their stay: hands-on art, historic buildings, live performances and trails for recreational activities. The places and offerings each have a different focus—from practical art techniques to trails of varying lengths and features.

Art, Architectural History and the Stage

AVA Gallery and Art Center is an arts campus in downtown Lebanon. There, you can weld metal, shape clay and make your own prints. Each of the three activities focuses on a different material and technique. Those interested in hands-on art will find practical opportunities to create here.

The Colburn Park Historic District includes 23 buildings, 19 of which are considered contributing properties. The district also includes several sites around and on the large rectangular green space of Colburn Park in the center of Lebanon. Two other historic landmarks are Dana House, the oldest surviving house in Lebanon, and Packard Hill Covered Bridge. It is a Howe truss bridge over the Mascoma River.

Lebanon Opera House is an active, year-round, fully renovated performing arts venue. It presents live performances that inspire, educate and entertain. Its focus differs from the hands-on work at AVA Gallery and Art Center: here, the emphasis is on stage performances, while the center offers activities involving metal, clay and printmaking.

The Lebanon Farmers' Market takes place in Colburn Park. Items for sale include vegetables, fruit, flowers and plants, dairy products, maple products, baked goods, meat and crafts. The market operates seasonally, and the selection of vendors may change. Check current market details before your visit.

Trails and Routes Around Lebanon

The 59-mile Northern Rail Trail begins in Lebanon in the Upper Valley and follows a historic railroad corridor. It is open year-round and is the longest rail trail in the state of New Hampshire. Its length and location on a former railroad corridor make it an option for a long outing.

The Mascoma River Greenway is a 2.5-mile paved multi-use trail that begins in downtown Lebanon. Its wide, flat surface is suitable for walking, biking and wheelchairs. The Greenway also passes through a long art-adorned tunnel featuring colorful murals by local artists. At 2.5 miles, it is considerably shorter than the Northern Rail Trail; the different trail lengths can help you choose between a shorter walk and a much longer route.

Another route option is the Enfield Shaker Village Scenic Byway. It runs 3.2 miles along Route 4A, starting in Lebanon at the intersection with Route 4 and ending at the Enfield Shaker Museum in Enfield. The road, length and two endpoints are specific points of reference for navigation. This distinguishes the byway from the trails described as recreational paths.
