Floyd County combines regional history with a landscape shaped in the south by the White River and Blanco Canyon. Several points of interest can help you plan your trip: historical topics from Floydada and the county, the collections of the Floyd County Museum, the High Plains landscape and the Caprock Canyons Trailway. Assiter Punkin Ranch and the City Park in Floydada also offer specific ideas for outings. First decide whether history, nature or an activity will be the focus of your trip; this can help you plan your hotel around the reason for your visit.

History of Floydada and the County

Della Plain was founded in 1887 and developed into an early agricultural center in the region. In 1890, Floydada was designated the county seat, the administrative center of Floyd County. Four years after that decision, only the community cemetery remained of Della Plain. The founding and early regional significance of Della Plain thus stand alongside Floydada’s institutional role as the county seat.

Other historical references mark different points in time: First Baptist Church of Floydada was organized in 1891, while Methodism in Floyd County dates back to the 1880s. First National Bank of Floydada has been at this location since 1912. A direct link to the hospitality of the time is the Commercial Hotel in Floydada, which opened in January 1913 with 21 guest rooms.

The Zimmerman House was listed as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1990. It is a Pueblo Revival-style building with hand-hewn beams, vigas and columns. The landmark designation places the house in its historical context; the named features also provide specific architectural points of reference.

Museum and Historical Context

The Floyd County Museum houses exhibits and genealogical records for Floyd County. It is located in the Surginer Hardware Store building near Town Square. The genealogical records add a second focus to the exhibits: family history alongside the objects on display.

The exhibits include artifacts from the 1540 Coronado expedition, discovered at the Jimmy Owens Site in Blanco Canyon. Recovered evidence and artifacts supported the theory that Coronado traveled through Blanco Canyon. The link between the finds and the expedition’s passage remains a supported theory. The Battle of Blanco Canyon is also described as one of the most decisive engagements in the U.S. Cavalry’s campaigns against the Comanche.

Landscape and Clarity Tunnel

In southern Floyd County, the White River and Blanco Canyon shape the landscape. The vegetation of the High Plains in Floyd County includes mid- to tall grasses and mesquite. The landscape features of the south and the vegetation of the High Plains thus offer two distinct points of connection with nature.

The Caprock Canyons Trailway runs through Floyd, Briscoe and Hall counties and passes through Clarity Tunnel. In summer, the tunnel is a habitat for a colony of up to half a million Mexican free-tailed bats. If you are interested in wildlife, summer is the specific seasonal connection to this colony.

Activities and Seasonal Planning

Assiter Punkin Ranch has a petting zoo with horses, donkeys, dogs, goats and a cat. The ranch also offers farm tours; seasonal details may vary. If these tours are important to your trip planning, check in advance which seasonal details apply to your travel dates.

Floydada City Park includes a swimming pool with several slides and other water features. Since recreational offerings can change, check the latest information before visiting if the pool is part of your plans.

The annual Old Settlers Reunion is hosted by the Floyd County Pioneer Association. A report from May 2026 mentions a petting zoo, flower shows, rope making, a tractor show and live music. Check the event dates and current program for your travel period.

For planning your trip, the topics can be distinguished as follows: Floydada and the museum offer points of connection with local and family history, Blanco Canyon with the landscape and historical context, and the ranch, park and reunion with specific activities. Choose the focus that suits your stay, and take into account the relevant seasonal or date information for ranch tours and events.
