Navasota brings together historic architecture, performing arts and recreational activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Navasota, the topics that interest you locally can help shape your travel plans. Historic homes, streetscapes, theaters and parks offer different perspectives, allowing you to tailor your stay to specific interests.

Historic Homes and Downtown

The homes reflect different periods and styles. The Templeman House was originally designed in the Queen Anne style and later altered to incorporate elements of the Prairie School style. It also recalls Navasota’s early cotton boom era. The Sangster House was built in 1902 in the Queen Anne Revival style, with Neoclassical elements on its exterior. The Terrell House is a Queen Anne-style residence; its gallery and gable ends feature elaborate Eastlake ornamentation. The three homes share a Queen Anne connection, while later alterations, Neoclassical facade elements and Eastlake ornamentation give each its own distinctive details.

Downtown itself is also part of the historic character. The historic cast-iron and wooden facades in downtown Navasota are part of the Navasota Commercial Historic District. This district is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Historic Routes

Historic routes add another perspective to the architecture. Washington Avenue through downtown follows La Bahia Road and was part of an early route connecting Washington-on-the-Brazos, Goliad, Anderson and Louisiana. The La Bahia Trail ran northeast from Goliad to Navasota; through the city, it probably followed Cedar Creek. This extends the historical perspective beyond the facades, to an early connection among several named places and the trail’s probable route through the city.

Theater and Recreation

The Navasota Theatre Alliance stages productions at the historic Sunny E. Furman Theatre in downtown Navasota. It also presents an annual dramatic walking tour at Oakland Cemetery, led by an NTA guide. A theater production and a guided cemetery tour differ in format and setting. If you would like to include one of these events in your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance.

The parks offer different highlights, too. Mance Lipscomb Park features a life-size bronze statue honoring blues musician Mance Lipscomb. August Horst Park has a disc golf course. The options range from public art to a recreational activity.

Local Places to Visit

In downtown Navasota’s historic Railroad District, WildFlyer Mead and Beer Company has a tasting room and kitchen. BeeWeaver’s Honey Bar is open seven days a week, and admission is free. Alongside the historic and cultural attractions, these places offer further specific points of interest to help shape your travel plans.
