Eagle Pass lies on the banks of the Rio Grande. The river landscape, the history of Fort Duncan, and cross-border culture offer different perspectives on the city.

Fort Duncan: Camp History and Museum

Fort Duncan was established in 1849 by Captain Sidney Burbank and Companies A, B, and F of the 1st U.S. Infantry as a camp on the eastern bank of the Rio Grande, at the site of present-day Eagle Pass. The Fort Duncan Museum is housed in the former main building of the Fort Duncan complex, which was restored along with several other buildings. The museum displays artifacts from Indigenous peoples, the military, and local history. Its themes therefore extend beyond military history alone. The museum also has a children's library.

Architecture and Cross-Border Culture

The Maverick County Courthouse adds an architectural perspective to the historical view. This border building, designed in the Victorian style, has battlements reminiscent of a fortress and is of considerable architectural significance. While Fort Duncan is associated with the history of a military camp, the courthouse offers a distinct perspective through its striking design.

The International Friendship Festival takes place every March and celebrates the long-standing friendly cooperation between Eagle Pass, Texas, and Piedras Negras, Mexico. The highlight is the Abrazo: people from both countries gather on the international bridge connecting them across the border and embrace there. If you’re planning a trip around the festival, it’s a good idea to check the specific event dates in advance.

Riverfront and Recreation

Shelby Park encompasses 47.4 acres of parkland on the banks of the Rio Grande. Another recreational spot is Maverick County Lake, located in the heart of downtown and suited to morning walks and fishing. The two places therefore differ in their described settings and the activities mentioned.

The Eagle Pass Golf Course is a nine-hole course with 18 teeing grounds and a length of 6,217 yards. Its challenging layout takes players over three ponds and the city’s arroyo. The nine holes and 18 teeing grounds are separate details. Practice greens are available for putting, chipping, and pitching.

The Eagle Pass Swimming Complex offers a large waterslide and swimming lessons during the summer season. Both are seasonal offerings. If you’d like to plan your trip around them, check in advance whether they’ll be available during your visit.

Bridges and Connections

International Bridge One has pedestrian walkways and connects the shopping centers in downtown Eagle Pass with the marketplace in the center of Piedras Negras. The Camino Real International Bridge has four inbound traffic lanes, including SENTRI, two outbound traffic lanes, and two six-foot-wide pedestrian walkways. If you plan to cross, it’s worth checking current operating conditions, as they may change.
