Poth: Local History of Railroads, Water, and Community
Accommodation in Poth
Poth’s local history can be explored through several specific themes: its early role as a railway junction, municipal water supply, and places of community life. If you are interested in the history of the community, its dated developments offer different perspectives. The story spans its founding as a railway junction, infrastructure facilities, and places for education and community life.
Railroads, the Name, and Water Supply
Poth was founded in 1886 as a railway junction on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway. In 1901, Poth was renamed when A. H. Poth built a cotton gin there. The two dates mark different stages of development: first, its founding by the railroad, and later, its renaming in connection with the facility.
The Poth Water Tower at 101 North Mayes, Poth, Texas 78147, was built in 1926 to supply the town of Poth with water. It is a community landmark. The water tower adds municipal water supply as another perspective on local history: its function differs from that of the railway junction or the cotton gin.
Places of Community Life
Mary Kennon Jones Poth dedicated Dilworth Plaza in 1904. The deed designated the plaza for use by the public and the purchasers of the town lots and blocks. This dedication offers insight into the plaza’s intended use and is a different kind of historical reference from a construction date or a description of a building.
In 1916, the Hermann Sons Lodge built a larger hall in Poth for community events. The hall was regularly used for public dances; political rallies and festivals were also occasionally held there. Its history can therefore be understood both through its construction date and through the different ways it was used in the past.
Also in 1916, a schoolhouse was moved from Dewees to Poth to establish Mount Moriah Baptist Church and Community School. For Black children, this was a place where they could feel safe and would not face discrimination. The history of the schoolhouse is therefore also tied to the institution’s social significance. St. John Lutheran Church in Poth was built in 1922; its construction date adds to the timeline of religious institutions.
Depot, Museum, and City Park
Poth’s depot was recently restored and is part of the town’s local museum. The museum’s main building is at the nearby town square. In this way, the depot’s history connects with another place where the town brings together its local heritage.
At Poth City Park, the pavilion, amphitheater, and sports fields can be reserved and rented. If you would like to use one of these facilities, check the reservation details in advance, as they may change. This is a practical planning consideration alongside the historical topics: local history and reserving a park facility concern different aspects of your stay.
For an overview, the topics can be distinguished easily: the railroad and cotton gin offer insight into the early stages of development, the water tower into municipal water supply, and the community facilities into social and cultural contexts. This way, you can focus on the aspects that interest you most during your visit.
