Dahlgren: Nature and Naval History
Accommodation in Dahlgren
Dahlgren offers several specific ways to plan a trip: nature at Dahlgren Wayside Park, trails in different formats, naval history, and events. If you’re looking for a hotel in Dahlgren, these distinctions can help you identify the purpose of your trip. The options range from a park with a beach and birdwatching to historic sites and events for the community. You can choose which of these will shape your stay based on your interests.
Nature at Dahlgren Wayside Park
Dahlgren Wayside Park is part of the Virginia Bird and Wildlife Trail. It offers a sandy beach, picnic facilities, and birdwatching opportunities. This means you can choose from different activities in the same park: spending time at the beach, taking a picnic break, or watching birds. If you’d like nature to be part of your trip, this combination gives you a specific starting point for planning. Before you go, you can decide whether the beach, a picnic, or birdwatching will be the main reason for your park visit.
Naval History with Specific Dates
The U.S. Naval Proving Ground in Dahlgren was established on October 16, 1918. Naval Support Facility Dahlgren was also established in 1918 on 4,000 acres in King George County, between the Potomac River and Machodoc Creek. It was a remote extension of the Indian Head Proving Ground in Maryland and served as a testing site for naval guns.
A 16-inch gun with a caliber of 28.8 stands on Tisdale Road, across from Dahlgren Road. It is the oldest surviving main battery gun from an American battleship. Originally manufactured in 1898 as a 13-inch Mark II gun with a caliber of 35, it is no longer in its original configuration. The administration building is also part of the base’s history: it was completed in 1920 and is the oldest nontechnical building there.
The NSF Dahlgren Visitor Center is located at 17320 Dahlgren Road, Dahlgren, VA 22448. Visitors without a CAC must complete form SECNAV 5512-1 to access the NSWCDD base. Check access information before your trip.
Trails in Different Formats
The Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail is 15.7 miles (25.3 km) long and runs from the western edge of King George County to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division. The Native American Heritage Trail & GeoTour consists of seven information panels and ten geocaching puzzles. The formats differ accordingly: for the Railroad Heritage Trail, the length and endpoints provide specific reference points; for the GeoTour, the panels and puzzles are part of its structure. When choosing, you can compare a route with named endpoints and an offering with information panels and geocaching puzzles as options for different interests.
Events and Reasons to Travel
The Dahlgren Campus offers event management and rents out its facilities for suitable public and private events. The UMW-Dahlgren Campus hosts nonprofit events for the community that benefit the wider Northern Neck region of Virginia. If one of these events is the reason for your trip, check the specific dates before planning around it; event dates may change. Event management and nonprofit campus events are distinct aspects: one concerns organizing suitable events, while the other concerns events for the community and their regional benefits.
