Discover Vinum
Accommodation in Vinum
If you are looking for a hotel in Vinum, the village’s history offers specific points of interest for planning your trip. Topics include the former Vinum Kro inn, Vinum Teglværk brickworks, the mill and the rural settlement pattern. Nearby Døstrup is another point of reference: it is home to Døstrup Sønderjylland railway station and the Late Romanesque church with its Late Gothic tower.
Vinum Kro and the general store
Vinum Kro was modernized and renovated by J. Thaysen Jensen in 1910. Vinum Kro ceased operating as an inn in the 1920s, while the general store continued until around 1970. The end of the inn’s operations therefore did not mean that all use ended at the same time: the store remained open longer. The two functions thus belong to different periods in the village’s history.
The brickworks and its technical history
Vinum Teglværk operated from around 1830 to around 1944. Its history also includes its establishment and later demolition. One technical detail is its track gauge of 600 mm. This is the distance between the rails and adds a specific measurement to the long period of operation. For anyone interested in historic trades, the brickworks offers both a timeline and technical details.
Farms and rural settlement
In 1688, Vinum had two farms and one privately owned farmstead. By 1776, there were five farms and nine smallholdings. These two years provide historical snapshots; they do not show year-by-year development. A farm in Vinum is also dated to the period from 1900 to 1950. The social history is part of the story too: the poor farm in Vinum was one of a total of 64 poor farms established in North Schleswig between 1815 and 1894. The farm numbers refer to Vinum, while North Schleswig provides the broader regional context for the poor farms.
The mill and nearby Døstrup Church
Vinum Mølle is part of the history of the Hansen miller family in Vinum and Døstrup. A photograph from 1930 shows Vinum Mølle and Møllehus. Family history and the image offer two different ways to explore this part of the village’s history: one through the miller family, the other through the mill and Møllehus. Nearby Døstrup Church is Late Romanesque and has a Late Gothic tower. Access can be arranged through church attendant Henning Schweer, at Genforeningsvej 10 in Skærbæk, or through the pastor; arrange this before your arrival.
Getting there and choosing a hotel
The nearby Døstrup Sønderjylland railway station is served by GoCollective. As operators and transport services can change, check the timetable for your travel dates. If proximity to the station is important when choosing a hotel, also check the location of the specific hotel before booking.
