Bad Schussenried combines monastic history and art with trails through a landscape shaped by the Ice Age. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you want your trip to focus mainly on the monastery complex, a range of museum subjects, or outdoor activities. The sights and routes offer different starting points, without requiring you to fit every theme into the same day’s itinerary.

Monastic History, Library, and Museum Collections

Schussenried Monastery was founded in 1183 by local lords Konrad and Beringer. The monastery museum presents more than 800 years of monastic history through various collections, including sculptures, Baroque paintings, epitaphs, liturgical objects, books, and reliquaries. Alongside works of art, visitors can also explore objects from religious life. The monastery is also a major attraction on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route.

The library hall is a highlight in its own right. The Baroque convent building that houses it was constructed between 1755 and 1763 under Jakob Emele. The library hall itself is a Rococo room where architecture, sculpture, and painting work together. It can therefore be appreciated not only as a library, but also as an interplay of these three artistic elements.

The Beer Mug Museum focuses on a different subject: five centuries of German drinking culture. It also displays a rock crystal described as the third largest in the world. Compared with the monastery museum, this subject offers a different perspective on cultural history. Visitors who include museums and collections in their travel plans can thus explore the distinctions between monastic history, religious objects, art, and everyday culture.

Trails with Different Profiles

The Bad Schussenried Geopath is an approximately four-kilometer circular trail with nine information stations about glacial landforms and no major inclines. A 2025 municipal tourism brochure describes the Panorama Trail as an easy hike covering 9.1 kilometers with 49 meters of elevation gain. It offers views of the Alps and Lake Olzreut; the return route passes through the Glacier Garden.

The details highlight different features: the Geopath focuses on information stations about Ice Age landforms. On the Panorama Trail, visitors can combine its length and elevation gain with the described views and return route through the Glacier Garden. Since local access conditions may change, check them before setting out on the Geopath.

Cyclists also have a direct route connection: Schussenried Monastery lies right on the Spa Cycle Route, which links Upper Swabia with Lake Constance. Check the signposting and access locally. Bad Schussenried is also part of the Way of St. James and the Poets’ and Mills’ Route. These route connections differ from the Panorama Trail and Geopath: they place the town on longer themed routes, while the two hiking trails are described by their own lengths, stations, and landscape features.

Landscape and Geological Context

The landscape around Bad Schussenried includes gentle hills, meadows, forests, lakes and ponds, moorland, and distant views of the Alps. At the source of the Schussen, landscape and geology meet: it is the spring basin of the Schussen and lies at the northernmost point of the Rhine Glacier’s terminal moraine. This terminal moraine forms the European watershed between the catchment areas of the Danube and the Rhine.

Another historical trace at the source of the Schussen is a memorial stone. It commemorates Ice Age hunter remains found there in 1866. Together with the Geopath’s stations, this site offers another connection to the glacial landforms described in Bad Schussenried. Travel planning can therefore draw on several distinct themes: the monastery’s collections and architectural history, the art in the library hall, the geological character of the landscape, and trails with clearly stated lengths and features.
