Accommodation in Betzenweiler
Betzenweiler combines a long local history with religious heritage, a cycling tour and a share of a nature reserve. This gives you various points to focus on when planning your trip: you can explore the town’s historic sites, time your stay to coincide with an August festival, or include the cycling tour. If you’re looking for a hotel, start by asking which purpose is the main focus of your trip.
Early mention and resettlement
Betzenweiler was probably first mentioned as early as 817 under the name “Perahtramnilvillare,” when the town passed into the possession of St. Gallen Abbey. During the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), almost the entire population was wiped out by the effects of war and the plague. At the initiative of a Father von Stein, the town was resettled by immigrants from Switzerland, mainly from the Inwil area. People from Betzenweiler are known in the surrounding area as “Steinschweizer” (Stein’s Swiss); the name is associated with this resettlement.
Chapels and parish church
A Marian chapel in Bischmannshausen, a district of Betzenweiler, was mentioned as early as 1693. Today’s Bischmannshauser Käppele is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul; residents of Bischmannshausen built it in 1909 to replace the earlier chapel. St. Clemens in Betzenweiler is a Roman Catholic parish church; the parish was first mentioned in 1275. St. Clemens has four bells: St. Mary, St. Clemens, St. Anthony and St. Joseph. The dates point to different milestones: 1275 marks the first mention of the parish, 1693 the Marian chapel mentioned in the records, and 1909 the construction of today’s Käppele.
Cycling tour and nature reserve
The Bussen-Blick-Weg is an 18.3 km circular cycling route that passes through Betzenweiler. The municipality also includes part of the Westliches Federseeried/Seelenhofer Ried nature reserve, which covers 241 ha in total. The cycling tour is a specific, quantified activity, whereas the area figure describes the entire nature reserve. These details offer different points of focus for your trip: cycling and a protected landscape.
Festival and municipal facilities
The music and village festival organized by the music association takes place every year in August at the festival grounds directly in front of the hall in Betzenweiler. The barbecue and playground in Betzenweiler includes a shelter with a barbecue area, outdoor furniture and a playground for younger visitors. Clubs, groups and individuals can rent the barbecue area from the Municipality of Betzenweiler for celebrations or events, subject to application and a fee. Ask the municipality about current options for your date.
Culture in the wider Biberach destination
The wider Biberach destination also offers distinct cultural attractions. The Oberschwäbisches Museumsdorf Kürnbach (Upper Swabian Museum Village of Kürnbach) brings six centuries of history to life and features more than 30 historic buildings that offer a glimpse into everyday life in times gone by. The Steinhausen pilgrimage church was built from 1728 to 1731 by Dominikus Zimmermann and his brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann. These examples complement Betzenweiler’s local history with distinct historical themes in the wider Biberach destination.
