Dettingen an der Iller: History and Cycling
Accommodation in Dettingen an der Iller
Dettingen an der Iller can be explored through its architectural and craft history, as well as its connection to cycling trips. The Heimertingen–Ulm stage of the Iller Cycle Path recommends the village museum as a stop in Dettingen. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these topics can help guide your choice of destination: local history and cycling offer different focuses, which you can weigh according to your travel plans.
Churches and Architectural History
The Church of the Assumption of Mary is listed in the register of historic monuments. It was built in 1911/1913 after an earlier church was demolished; its oldest parts had been dated to 1271. The year 1271 therefore belongs to the history of the earlier building, not to the present church. This sequence places the newer building within a much longer historical context.
The Unterdettingen Chapel is protected as a historic monument and is dedicated to Saints Vitus and Agatha. The present building dates predominantly from the 18th century; the older tower is not included in this dating. Inside are late Baroque wooden figures. The tower bell was cast as early as 1510, providing an earlier date than the building fabric, which mostly dates from the 18th century. The motorway service area is also considered Germany’s first artistically designed motorway service area.
Village Museum and Crafts
The Dettingen & Illertal Village Museum opened at Whitsun in 1994. Its craft exhibits include a working smithy, which has been part of the museum since Whitsun 1998, and a wheelwright’s workshop, which has been there since 2010. Guided tours can be arranged. Confirm the date and contact details in advance, as organizational information may change.
Local craft history extends beyond the workshops: in the 19th century, Dettingen had 23 basket makers who made willow baskets and sold them in the region. The Dettingen & Illertal dialect booklet features vocabulary and sayings used in Dettingen and neighboring communities. The sixth edition, published in 2016, contains more than 3,000 words and 450 sayings. The booklet is available at the village museum; check current availability in advance, as sales outlets may change.
Iller Cycle Path and Orientation
The Heimertingen–Ulm stage of the Iller Cycle Path is 45.90 kilometers long and rated easy. For a stop in Dettingen, the stage recommends visiting the village museum. As route descriptions and measurements may change, check the latest route information before your ride.
A figure for the eastern municipal boundary should be distinguished from the stage length: for around four kilometers, it follows the left bank of the unregulated course of the Iller as it was in 1852. This places two different geographical measurements side by side—the length of the cycling stage and a section of the municipal boundary. They do not describe the same route.
