Ummendorf: Castle, Churches and Nature
Accommodation in Ummendorf
Ummendorf offers several starting points for a trip that brings together local history, religious sites, landscapes and leisure. Ummendorf Castle, the Catholic church and Kreuzberg represent different cultural and religious themes; Bannwald Buch adds a natural perspective. The swimming lake offers swimming and relaxation, and there is a mini golf course nearby. If you are looking for a hotel in Ummendorf, these themes can help you decide which interests will shape your stay.
Ummendorf Castle and its history
Ummendorf Castle was built around 1560 by Augsburg patrician Matthias Manlich. After his death, it remained in the hands of Ochsenhausen Abbey for several generations. From 1623 until the second half of the 17th century, the castle housed the monastery’s college. Its construction, ownership history and educational use can thus be seen as distinct chapters in the castle’s story. Today, the Ummendorf cultural association uses the castle as a venue for events. Access may vary depending on the event, so check in advance what visiting options are available for your chosen date.
Church and art history
Ummendorf’s Catholic church stands at the heart of the old village center and is considered one of the most impressive village churches in Upper Swabia. The church houses a Madonna by Hans Multscher dating from around 1450. The Madonna is therefore roughly a century older than Ummendorf Castle, whose construction began around 1560. The church thus combines its prominent place in the old village center with a specific connection to art history.
Kreuzberg and Prälatenhöhe
On the eastern edge of Ummendorf, Kreuzberg is used for communal religious services and private prayer. The complex includes 14 stations, the Loretto Chapel, the Mount of Olives and the Lourdes grottoes; another chapel was added in 2013. While the Madonna in the church provides an art-historical focal point, Kreuzberg is characterized by its many places of devotion. The monument to Sebastian Kneipp also stands on Prälatenhöhe; it was erected in 1899 by Prelate Dr. Hofele.
Bannwald Buch and the landscape
The 43-hectare Buch forest district in Ummendorf was designated a Bannwald (protected forest reserve) in August 2000. Bannwald Buch lies on steep slopes above the Umlach Valley. Its landscape features include moraines, glacial gravel deposits, spring hollows and small streams. The Bannwald concept is intended to allow forest areas typical of the region to develop naturally towards a primeval forest. For your trip planning, this natural setting offers a different focus from the castle and churches: here, the emphasis is on slopes, deposits and forest development rather than architectural and art history.
Swimming lake and mini golf
Ummendorf’s swimming lake offers swimming and relaxation on the edge of a protected area. Seasonal opening and operation may vary; check before your visit whether the facilities will be available on your chosen date. A mini golf course is located near the lake; check its availability in advance. This gives you a choice between two different leisure activities: swimming and relaxing by the water, or playing mini golf.
