Alb Gorge and Culture in the Wilfingen Area

In the wider Wilfingen area, which includes Vogelbach, the Alb Gorge lies at the Teufelsküche (Devil’s Kitchen). The gorge there is considered a wild whirlpool of the Alb. A walking path leads there; a shaded natural swimming spot is nearby in summer. This makes both the gorge and an explicitly seasonal opportunity to enjoy the water excursion destinations in the area.

Wilfingen is also home to the Little Church of St. Pantaleon, dating from the 15th century. Its distinctive bells ring on the hour. Together with the Alb Gorge, the Wilfingen area offers two different highlights: a natural attraction on the Alb and a historic building with bells that ring regularly.

More Destinations in the Wider Dachsberg (Southern Black Forest) Travel Area

Dachsberg and Ibach have an extensive network of trails for hiking, Nordic walking, cycling, and winter excursions. These include scenic routes along the high ground, forest paths, and groomed winter hiking trails. The latter run through the plateaus and forests of Dachsberg and Ibach; they are seasonal and depend on snow conditions. This is an important distinction when planning your excursions: some outdoor activities are available year-round, while these trails depend on winter and snow.

The Albsteig Black Forest was awarded premium hiking trail status in 2017. It runs from the mouth of the Alb near Albbruck to its sources on the Feldberg, climbing up to Dachsberg along the way and offering fantastic views from there. The route thus connects the mouth of the Alb, Dachsberg, and the source area on the Feldberg.

Another regional hiking trail focuses on history: the mining trail is about seven kilometers long and connects former mining sites. You can choose the Mineral Museum in Urberg or the town hall in Wittenschwand as your starting point. Its length, starting points, and theme give this trail a different character from the Albsteig, which runs from the mouth of the Alb to its sources on the Feldberg.

In Dachsberg-Urberg, near the Goldenhof, the Zeidlerpfad (traditional beekeeping trail) explains how honey was once harvested and bees were kept. It offers insights into traditional forest beekeeping and its ecological significance. The region’s attractions thus highlight two different forms of historical land use: mining and forest beekeeping.

The “Gottesehre” Mineral Museum in Dachsberg-Urberg complements the mining theme with a film and other media about the disused mine. Several display cases showcase magnificent minerals from the mine. The mining trail can begin at the museum, giving visitors two different ways to explore the former mining sites: the trail and the exhibition.

Dachsberg and Ibach are also members of the Black Forest Biosphere Reserve, established in 2016. This adds a wider regional context to the area’s hiking and cultural attractions.
