Lembach: Early History and Tufa
Accommodation in Lembach
A trip to Lembach brings together several themes: early settlement, church history, and the geology of tufa and karst water. The Bildhaus nearby also offers views as far as the Swiss Alps and across the Baar region. If you are looking for a hotel in Lembach, you can use these themes as a starting point and consider whether history, scenery, or a hike will shape your trip.
Early History and the Parish Church
Lembach has a burial ground from the Hallstatt period, dated to 700–400 BC. Merovingian-period graves place Lembach among the earliest settlement layers; a prehistoric ring rampart is also part of the town’s history. These traces point to different early historical periods: the burial ground is assigned to a specific era, while the Merovingian graves mark Lembach’s place within an early settlement layer. The historical perspective therefore extends beyond a single building to encompass a range of archaeological topics.
A church in Lembach is documented in 1360/70. The parish church of St. Peter and Paul was built in 1830 and extended in 1898. This brings together an early documented reference and two later stages of construction. The dates can be read as a timeline: the record of a church is followed by the construction of the parish church and its extension. For travelers interested in cultural history, this building history complements the early historical finds with a clearly dated reference point from the 19th century.
Tufa and Geological Development
Two small tufa quarries lie in the narrow Rohrbach Valley, within the municipality of Wutach, in the Lembach district. The valley is part of a geological context that also includes the formation of sinter terraces: in the Wutach–Lembach area, karst water formed such terraces during the Holocene. The quarries and sinter terraces thus offer different perspectives on geology—from specific rock deposits to the formation of a landscape feature over a long period.
The Wutach-Lembach quarry (RG 8216-1) works a tufa deposit up to 10 m thick (as of 2021). This figure refers to the status in 2021. By contrast, the geological development caused by karst water dates to the Holocene. Those interested in the landscape can therefore find both a specific measure of the tufa deposit and a much older geological context.
The Bildhaus and Its Views
Near Lembach, the Bildhaus stands on the hill between Lembach and Ewattingen. The building, which is located on an old pilgrimage route, once served as a shelter or prayer room and is now a popular viewpoint. From there, panoramic views extend as far as the Swiss Alps and across the Baar region. Its location, former function, and present-day views are different aspects of the same place. If you are more interested in scenery than archaeological traces of the past, the Bildhaus offers a different focus.
Hike through the Wutach Gorge
A hike through the Wutach Gorge starts with a bus ride to the SchattenmĂĽhle, followed by a walk back through the gorge. The route is 12 km long and takes about five hours. At the Lothenbach stop, it can be extended with a 1.2 km hike through the Lothenbach Gorge. You can plan the stated main route and the additional gorge hike as different route options; the approximate five-hour duration applies to the 12 km route. Check the bus timetable in advance if you are planning this tour.
