Burgdorf offers several ways to shape your stay: castle and city history, exhibitions and cultural events, as well as walks in the Aue valley and parks. When choosing a hotel, you can decide whether historic sites, a cultural event or paths through the landscape should be the focus of your stay.

Castle and City History

Burgdorf Castle is the historic heart of the city and stands on the site of the 13th-century castrum burgtorfe. The present castle building was constructed in 1643 and renovated between 1979 and 1981. This brings together two periods: the older site of the castrum and the construction history of the present building. Burgdorf Castle is open to visitors; check access and conditions on site before your visit.

Museum, Remembrance and Cultural Programme

The Burgdorf City Museum is a museum and cultural centre with changing exhibitions on local and cultural history. Its collections cover local history, prehistory and early history, as well as folklore. Collection displays may rotate and exhibition themes may change. If you are interested in a particular topic, check in advance what will be on display during your stay.

KulturWerkStadt is housed in a former synagogue, which was used as such until 1939. Regular exhibitions and cultural events are presented there. A plaque on the building and Stolpersteine (stumbling stones), located there and at other houses in Burgdorf, commemorate Jewish residents who were victims of Nazi persecution.

The city museum regularly hosts talks on local history, readings, concerts and small-scale cultural performances. Burgdorf Castle Concerts, meanwhile, are an annual series of seven chamber concerts in the castle’s council chamber. While the museum offers different types of events, this series focuses on chamber music. Event schedules and concert programmes may change; if you are planning around a particular date, check the latest information in advance.

Walks and Nature

The Aue valley offers several places to explore on walks, including the castle park, city park and a wetland habitat. The Amtsgarten is traversed by the Burgdorfer Aue and includes an old lime-tree avenue. This means you can enjoy walks through green spaces while also seeking out specific features of the landscape.

The wildlife of the Burgdorfer Aue is also part of the area’s natural appeal: beavers have returned to the area, and eel, pike, tench and perch are also found there. Which animals you may see can vary by season. This is worth bearing in mind when planning if you are interested in nature watching, without counting on any particular sighting.

Sound Trails in Burgdorf

The Klangschatzsuche (Sound Treasure Hunt) starts at Burgdorf railway station. You can follow the full circular route or create your own route. Before your visit, check whether the installation is currently operating.

In 2018, eight sound-producing streetlamps in Burgdorf presented local history and stories. If you would like to include this installation in your stay, check its availability in advance.
