Kellenhusen (Baltic Sea) brings together three distinct leisure experiences: a 600-hectare forest, a promenade with play and sports facilities, and a 305 m-long pier. Nature and trail activities, landscaped areas for spending time, and activities by the water each offer a different focus. As you plan your trip, you can consider which of these settings you want to shape your stay—the individual activities remain clearly distinct.

Forest and trails in Kellenhusen Forest

Kellenhusen Forest offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. Its features include a forest pond, a forest playground and an educational trail with 23 information boards. There is also a wild boar enclosure that visitors can enter free of charge. Here, trail activities meet a play area and an educational trail; anyone looking to combine exercise and nature topics will find several different ways to do so. The information boards provide the educational trail with its explanatory dimension. Educational installations may be renewed over time.

Play, relaxation and exercise along the promenade

The promenade brings together a variety of features: water features, Ice Age erratics, secluded spots to relax and artificial dunes, as well as a maze, fountains and fish sculptures. Playgrounds and a skate park add to the mix. For sports, there is a disc golf course with 22 baskets, multipurpose sports areas, and beach soccer and beach volleyball facilities. The options therefore range from relaxing in a secluded spot to play and exercise. Individual facilities may occasionally be maintained or changed.

Three themed islands on the pier

The 305 m-long pier has three accessible themed islands that bring together different uses. One island is designed for relaxation, with hammocks and steps providing access to the water. Another includes a bathing and jumping area. The third features a covered viewing platform and a boat landing. In summer, excursions depart from there, including trips to Dahme and Fehmarn; excursion services may vary seasonally. The layout makes the pier’s different areas easy to distinguish: relaxation, swimming and jumping, and views and boat access each have their own focus.

More to explore in the wider Ostholstein destination

The wider Ostholstein destination also includes cultural attractions in other towns. Every summer, the Eutin Festival stages various opera and operetta performances as open-air events. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin presents changing exhibitions as well as a permanent exhibition about Eutin during its heyday around 1800. In the municipality of Grömitz, Cismar Monastery also presents changing exhibitions and holds concerts in its vaulted hall during the winter half of the year.

The Oldenburg Wall Museum in Oldenburg in Holstein offers another regional focus. Using archaeological finds and reconstructions, it presents the archaeologically and historically reconstructable history of the Oldenburg Ring Wall and the Slavs in Ostholstein. Oldenburg Wall is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s most significant archaeological monuments. These examples complement Kellenhusen’s specific nature, play and water activities with cultural and historical topics from the wider Ostholstein destination.
