When looking for a hotel for Twedt, start with the focus of your trip. In the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination, historical sites, landscapes and trails are in the spotlight. Consider whether you are more interested in historical sites, observing nature or outdoor activities.

Culture and history in Schleswig-Flensburg

Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the rampart of the Danevirke still remain today. These facts highlight two aspects of the subject: the joint World Heritage designation and the extent of the surviving rampart. The Idstedt memorial and museum offer a different historical focus. They provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt.

Film history is also one of the region’s themes. From 1986 to 2012, Kappeln served as a filming location for the television series “Der Landarzt” under the name “Deekelsen”. Arnis and the Schlei were filming locations for a German adaptation of “Five Friends”. Arnis is also now a destination for water sports enthusiasts. Historic buildings and events thus sit alongside filming locations and an interest in water sports as different starting points for planning a trip.

Nature and outdoor activities

With a total area of 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. It has well-maintained trails and guided hikes that share information about flora and fauna. Holnis offers a different focus: the peninsula is the northernmost point of Schleswig-Holstein’s young moraine landscape. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species. Guided nature tours and birdwatching therefore offer different perspectives on nature in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination.

The landscape of Schlei Nature Park is shaped by gentle hills, forests, hedgerows, and fields of rapeseed and grain; there are also sandy beaches and swimming coves. The brackish waters of the Schlei provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. Guided nature tours are offered in the nature park. The Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycling routes also pass through the landscape.

One specific cycling option described is the 25-kilometre SchleiUferTörn: a circular route around the central part of the Schlei that starts in Arnis. The wider Schlei region also has local hiking trails as well as long-distance and themed cycling routes; other activities mentioned include sailing, paddling, rowing and canoeing. The range of themes thus extends from guided nature experiences and birdwatching to trails and water sports.

To help decide where to travel, you can first weigh up these interests—for example, historical sites, guided hikes, birdwatching or a cycling tour of a set length. Information about Schleswig-Flensburg and the wider Schlei region offers different thematic starting points. You can determine which location and amenities suit you by checking the respective hotel listings.
