Explore Baja / Frankenstadt through its cultural sites and its waterside setting. At Szentháromság tér, history meets views of the river landscape; museums are devoted to painting, regional history and life by the water. There are also seasonal visits, events and water tours. The topics you’d like to explore further can shape the focus of your stay.

Square, Monument and View

Szentháromság tér is Baja’s main square. It takes its name from the statue of the Holy Trinity in its center, erected in the 18th century in memory of liberation from plague epidemics. On the western side of the square, the view opens out onto the Sugovica, the opposite Petőfi-sziget and the surrounding natural landscape. A monument and a panoramic landscape come together in one place. The Bajai Halfőző Fesztivál is also held in the square and has become a tradition. If you’d like to plan your stay around it, check the latest event dates and program.

Museums and Art Collections

The Éber Memorial House showcases the artistic legacy of the painters Sándor Éber senior and his two children, Sándor Éber junior and Anna Éber. The Türr-István-Museum focuses on prehistoric finds as well as finds from the Migration Period and the Avar period. A description of an exhibition dated January 2020 also mentions a fully excavated Sarmatian cemetery, described as unique in Europe. The museum’s ethnographic exhibition preserves an extensive textile collection featuring traditional clothing from the ethnic communities of North Bácska.

Since 1985, the art collection of the Nagy-István-Galerie has been housed in a former Neoclassical Vojnich mansion. It displays paintings by Nagy István, along with works by contemporary artists from North Bácska and the local area. In addition to its permanent exhibition, the gallery presents three to four temporary exhibitions each year. These include works from the Oltványi Collection, by members of the Rudnay artists’ colony and by the Bajai Nagy István Művészeti Egyesület. For specific exhibitions, it’s worth checking the current program.

Life by the Water and Seasonal Visits

The Halászati Miniskanzen, at the confluence of the Sugovica and the Danube, offers a glimpse into the former way of life by the water, the daily lives of fishermen and their tools. Children can enjoy traditional games and craft activities. The open-air museum also includes a working ship mill on the Danube, powered by the current. It is the only one of its kind along the entire navigable stretch of the Danube and is open to the public seasonally.

During the summer season, the exhibitions at the Halászati Miniskanzen are open to visitors for four hours a day. Groups are received by prior arrangement. Since visits depend on the season and date, check the latest opening times before your trip. This makes it easier to distinguish a museum visit from activities that take place at a specific time.

Water Tours and Events

The Mogyi Bajai Vízisport Klub organizes camps, family days and corporate events. Visitors can also take part in water tours; contact the club to ask about its current offerings. Antal Pincészet also welcomes groups of visitors who would like a glimpse into everyday life at the winery.

At the marina, a water stage also serves as a floating multimedia fountain. Concerts and performances provide evening entertainment. The program is seasonal, so check the current schedule. For planning purposes, there is a practical difference between museum and gallery collections on the one hand, and seasonal visits or events on the other: for the former, the exhibition themes matter most; for the latter, it’s mainly the dates and season.
