Sant'Elpidio a Mare: History, Art and Museums
Accommodation in Sant'Elpidio A Mare
Sant'Elpidio a Mare lies on a hill above the valleys of the Chienti and Tenna rivers. History and art shape the town, as do its August traditions. Visitors interested in architectural history, collections or historical events will find a range of themes to consider when planning their trip.
From the Medieval Borgo to the Historic Centre
Rebuilding Sant'Elpidio a Mare on the Colle della Pieve began in 1380 and formed today's historic centre. The Roman city of Cluana once stood within the area of this centre. Another historical landmark is the medieval borgo, known as “Castello di Sant'Elpidio”: it arose in the 11th century on a hill, at whose highest point stands the Church of Madonna dei Lumi.
These details trace different periods without conflating them into a single founding story: Cluana belongs to the Roman past, the borgo arose in the Middle Ages, and rebuilding on the Colle della Pieve began in 1380. The historic centre thus provides a tangible setting for understanding the town's development over time.
Art and Museums
The former monastery of the Oratorian Fathers houses the Pinacoteca Civica “Vittore Crivelli” and the Museo della Calzatura. The latter is named after its initiator and founder, Cav. Vincenzo Andolfi. The Pinacoteca preserves Vittore Crivelli's Polittico dell’Incoronazione e Santi and Trittico della Visitazione con la Pietà . It also displays the large altarpiece Assunzione, created by Girolamo Dente, known as Tizianello, in 1564.
Another venue for artworks is the council chamber of the Palazzo Comunale. Works by Vittore Crivelli, Ernst Van Schayck and Tizianello are displayed there. The references to the Pinacoteca and the council chamber concern different exhibition venues. Those interested in the town's art history can therefore consider not only the individual artists, but also the different works and their stated locations.
The Museo dei fossili offers a different perspective. It is a permanent exhibition at the headquarters of Contrada San Giovanni, established through the work of local researchers from Sant'Elpidio a Mare. The exhibits span the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras through to the Neozoic; the exhibition illustrates geological changes in Italy, particularly in the Marche region. Alongside artworks, the town's offerings thus include geological history and the work of local researchers.
Buildings and Historic Sites
The Teatro Luigi Cicconi was built in 1872 and is located on Corso Baccio in the historic centre. Its history also includes the historic curtain: Ferdinando Cicconi created the tempera painting in 1873; it depicts notable figures from the Marche region. The construction date and the curtain date from consecutive years, but are two separate details in the theatre's history.
The Palazzo Comunale was built in the 14th century as the Palazzo dei Priori. The Torre Gerosolimitana stands in Piazza Civica, at the highest point of the town, and is 28 metres high. The Chiesa del Santissimo Sacramento, meanwhile, was built in the 13th century by the Knights of the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. These sites represent different aspects of local architectural and religious order history.
The Santuario della Madonna degli Angeli is also linked to another pilgrimage site: it was built with the intention of recreating the Porziuncola di Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi. The description refers to the architectural intention, not an exact replica. This connection is the key historical point of reference for understanding the sanctuary.
August Traditions and Guided Tours
The festival in honour of the Madonna degli Angeli is celebrated every year on 1 August, on the eve of the Perdono di Assisi. The Contesa del Secchio, a historical re-enactment, also takes place in the second week of August. Four of the town's Contrade compete in an old ball-game tradition. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the local programme for the relevant date.
The municipal cultural and tourism office offers guided tours of the historic centre and the Torre Gerosolimitana. Since schedules may change, it is advisable to check current tour dates before visiting. Sant'Elpidio a Mare is also one of the important and well-known centres of the Fermo-Macerata footwear district—a further facet of local identity alongside history, art and festival traditions.
