Dębowiec: Brine, Ponds and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Dębowiec
Dębowiec brings together landscapes, local fish farming and historic buildings. Three highlights can help you get your bearings: the pond landscape and its walking routes, the use of brine, and the town’s architectural history. Geographically, Dębowiec lies at the boundary of the Pogórze Cieszyńskie, the Wysoczyzna Kończycka and the Dolina Górnej Wisły. The nearby valley of the Knajka stream and a complex of fish ponds shape the landscape. You can explore the town through both its surroundings and its individual buildings and uses.
Pond landscapes, walks and brine
The area around the Dębowieckie Ponds is an appealing place for walks. The pond complex is therefore not only a feature of the landscape, but also a specific starting point for spending time outdoors. Fish have been farmed in the Dębowieckie Ponds for centuries. At the Gospodarstwo Rybackie in Dębowiec, numerous freshwater fish species are bred, among other activities. Centuries of fish farming are linked to the ponds; at the Gospodarstwo Rybackie, the focus is on breeding a variety of freshwater species.
Brine from Dębowiec is another point of interest. The brine and the salt made from it are used for inhalations, compresses, gargling and baths. To understand the distinction between these topics, it helps to note that brine is associated with specific applications, while the ponds are associated with the landscape, walks and fish farming.
Granary and architectural history
The granary in Dębowiec is a surviving relic of the former manor buildings and has an unusual octagonal shape. The building was used as a water tower until 1910, after which it served as a granary. Its change of function and unusual shape offer two ways to understand the building: through its architecture and its history of use. Access to the granary is restricted; you can view the building from the outside. A visit therefore focuses on its exterior.
Churches with different timelines
The churches also offer insight into different periods in the town’s history. The origins of the parish of St. Margaret’s Church are dated to the 14th century, around 1335. Construction of the new church began in 1854 and lasted two years. These are different points of reference: the date around 1335 refers to the parish, while 1854 marks the start of construction of the new church.
A later expansion is the focus of the Evangelical Church of the Redeemer. In 2000, the number of seats increased from 170 to 230. The two building histories can therefore be understood in different ways: at St. Margaret’s, the early origins of the parish contrast with the much later construction of a new church; at the Church of the Redeemer, the focus is on an expansion that brought a clearly quantified change in seating capacity. At the Evangelical Church of the Redeemer in Dębowiec, a small chapel was built in 1869; in 1912, a chapel three times its size was built.
