Žirany: Chapels, Mud Houses and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Žirany
Žirany brings together several distinct themes for a stay: religious buildings from different centuries, preserved mud houses, local craft history and hiking opportunities. The village lies in the Žirany Pass at an elevation of 251 m, in the headwaters of the Hunták and Bocegaj streams. If you are looking for a hotel, you can decide when planning your trip whether to focus mainly on the village’s history or its trails.
Chapels and Local History
A Baroque church dating from 1734 preceded the present church building, which was rebuilt in 1938–1939. The individual chapels are separate buildings: the Chapel of Saint Urban in the vineyards was built in 1795, the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk dates from 1843, and the Chapel of Saint Vendelin from 1912. A stone cross from 1823 stands in the parish courtyard of Žirany, near the road. The dates distinguish each building: 1938–1939 refers to the present church building, while the chapels each have their own dates of origin.
The municipal museum was established in an extension to a former shop and its storeroom. It was officially opened on December 11, 1977; the municipal description also notes that the building is in considerable need of repair. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether access is possible. A written record from 1379 states that the Chapter of Esztergom established the right to import wine from Žirany. Wine is therefore also part of the village’s older history, regardless of which themes you choose to focus on during your stay.
Mud Houses, Folk Culture and Crafts
Preserved mud houses with three rooms and hipped roofs can be seen in Žirany. The Žirany folk house, also known as a tájház, houses an exhibition on folk culture. Visits to the folk house must be arranged in advance. Since arrangements may change, confirm your visit again before travelling. A commemorative plaque is also located in the vestibule of the Žirany cultural centre.
The village’s history also includes the manual quarrying of limestone on the eastern slopes of Vápenník and Žibrica. This work, along with the production of quicklime in simple kilns, is documented there from the 17th century. In Žirany, architectural history, folk culture and the memory of a local craft are distinct historical themes that sit side by side.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
The red-marked Ponitrianska magistrála passes through Žirany. Check the trail markings locally before setting out on a hike. The Kostoliansky Educational Trail between Gýmeš and Kostolianske lúky has stops 32, 33 and 34 in Žirany. The routes are described differently: the Ponitrianska magistrála is said to pass through Žirany, while the educational trail has three numbered stops in the village. If you plan to visit particular stops, check the route infrastructure before setting out, as it may change.
Leisure Centre and Getting There
The Žirany leisure centre includes an amphitheatre, a traffic-training area, swings, a slide, two tennis courts, a volleyball court and a concrete area for mini-football. If a particular facility is important to your plans, ask about its availability in advance. Žirany can be reached by regional bus, and parking is also available. Check current bus services and parking conditions before travelling. This allows you to take into account not only the historic sites but also the available routes and visiting conditions when deciding whether to stay.
