Portell De Morella brings together textile history, fossils, religious and castle architecture, archaeological traces, hiking trails, and local traditions. When choosing a destination, these themes can be grouped according to different interests: museums and buildings offer different highlights from routes and pilgrimage traditions.

Textile History and Fossils

The Museo del textil de Portell is located in the La Rosaleda complex and explores the town’s textile history and the Faixeros. The Muestra Textil La Rosaleda displays looms, fabrics, and yarns, with information panels accompanying the exhibits. This brings both the history of textiles in Portell and specific materials into focus.

Tierra de Dinosaurios displays dinosaur fossils and fossils of other animals, including crocodiles, plesiosaurs, and pterosaurs. All the pieces come from sites in Portell. The origin of the collection’s pieces is therefore also part of the exhibition’s theme.

Castle, Churches, and Archaeological Traces

The parish church of La Asunción is an 18th-century Baroque building incorporated into the castle complex; its façade is Neoclassical. The Castillo de Portell is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). Its main tower now serves as the church’s bell tower. Portell Puerta Templaria uses an information panel and audiovisual presentation to explain the presence and historical influence of the Knights Templar in Portell.

The Ermita de la Mare de Déu de l'Esperança dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its single-nave vault has ribs arranged in a star pattern. In contrast to the parish church, whose façade has Neoclassical features, the vault construction is a distinctive architectural feature here.

The En Balaguer archaeological site in the municipality of Portell consists of small rural settlements used for farming, livestock raising, and storage. A 2024 archaeological overview lists a total of 29 prehistoric motifs at the Abrigo del Mas de la Rambla, with features of Levantine and schematic rock art. The Puente de la rambla is a medieval bridge over the Rambla Celumbres and was already in existence in 1212.

Natural Area and Hiking Trails

The protected Rambla Celumbres municipal natural area lies where the municipalities of Castellfort, Cinctorres, and Portell de Morella meet. Its values include ecological, landscape, historical-cultural, and recreational aspects. This makes clear that the area does not belong to Portell alone.

The SL-CV 134 Sender de la Cova AntolĂ  linear hiking trail is 2.00 km long. It leads from the upper part of Portell de Morella through the Barranco de la Rosella to the distinctive natural site of Toll de Cova AntolĂ . The SL-CV 133 Sender de les Albaredes hiking trail runs between El Portell de Morella and Casas de San Juan via the barranc de la Caseta and les Alberedes. The PR-CV 408 starts in Portell de Morella. Before hiking these trails, check the signage and maintenance.

The currently valid GR 331 E02 stage starts on Avenida San Isidro in Portell de Morella and ends on Carrer del Pilar in Cinctorres. Its latest quality inspection took place in December 2025. For regional context: Portell is a gateway to the Els Ports area from the west via the CV-125.

Pilgrimage Traditions

The Peregrinos de Portell are a tradition of medieval origin: twelve local pilgrims walk in silence to Sant Pere de Castellfort and return in the afternoon. The Sant Marc pilgrimage leads to the Ermita de Les Alberedes and includes a procession, the ringing of bells, and a mass. The two traditions therefore differ in their described activities and destinations.
