Historic Sites and Performances
The Hood County Courthouse is a limestone building designed by W.C. Dodson in 1890 in the French Second Empire style. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a State Antiquities Landmark and Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. One detail inside the building has a story of its own: the 1890 Seth Thomas clock mechanism was restored by the county to its original working condition.
Historic Granbury Square was the first courthouse square in Texas to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The square offers restaurants, bars, a vibrant art scene, live shows, historic museums, and specialty retail. As offerings can change, it is worth checking current options if you are planning a specific visit.
The J.F. and J. Nutt Building was built in 1893 from hand-hewn Hood County stone and is designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The Granbury Opera House dates to 1886 and was restored and reopened in 1975. It is home to the Granbury Theatre Company, which presents 8 to 10 productions throughout the year; the program may change.
The Hood County Jail Museum is housed in an 1885 jail building that served as the city’s only jail until 1978. The building retains a gallows room, a solitary cell, and a main cell with a freestanding iron cage. Museum hours are listed as Friday through Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m.; check these hours before your visit.
The Brazos Drive-In Theater offers a different kind of cultural program. It has been operating since 1952 and is considered the longest continuously operating drive-in theater in Texas. It shows double features in the evenings; check the schedule for your planned date.
Nature Trails and Local History
The trails vary in length and layout: the Moments In Time Hike & Bike Trail is a 2.93-mile concrete path from Granbury Airport to Hewlett Park. Acton Nature Center has more than five miles of maintained trails. This gives you a choice between a single, specifically named route and a longer trail network when planning your visit.
At Acton Nature Center, trails lead to a natural pond where toads live. The grounds also include the Elizabeth Crockett Memorial Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden. The Elizabeth Crockett Butterfly Trail is accessible for people with disabilities and runs through the butterfly garden. Bird enthusiasts can plan to join the free guided bird walk held by the Nature Center on the first Saturday of every month.
The Acton State Historic Site also commemorates Elizabeth Crockett: it marks her burial site. Elizabeth Crockett was Davy Crockett’s second wife.
Water, Green Spaces, and Regional Cuisine
Boating, kayaking, jet skiing, and paddleboarding are available at Lake Granbury. Public-use areas managed by the Brazos River Authority include boat ramps, campgrounds, and fire pits. Facility conditions may change; check current conditions before use. If you plan to rent equipment, check availability in advance.
Granbury City Beach is located downtown on Lake Granbury and includes a splash park, summer kayak rentals, and picnic pavilions. Hours are listed as 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; if sunset is later on a particular day, the beach remains open until then. Check the hours before your visit. You should not assume that swimming or a sandy beach is available.
Shanley Park is located in historic downtown Granbury. Landscaped areas with fountains, paths, and bridges surround a winding stream. For food enthusiasts, Granbury features an official Foodie Trail with Italian cuisine, barbecue, and other types of cuisine. Participating businesses may change, so it may be helpful to check the current selection in advance.
